First Car?

I had a Volvo Amazon (122 in the US) from '67. Man she was a pile of junk but I loved her to death. Had to let 'er go when I got my first company car, '13 KIA Rio. I had this naive vision that driving brand new cars all the time was going to be fun, alot more fun than driving an old car that always needed some work. Boy was I wrong.

 

Since it was rear wheel drive it was mandatory to take it power sliding in the winter.

 

 

 

I still miss the car, despite it taking in lots of water when it rained, it rusting to bits etc. But I got the impression that it went to a good home which gives some comfort.

I still can't believe that VAG South Africa continued building the Mk2Mk1, albeit with slightly more modern engines, about 3540 years after it was released.

 

they only just stopped making datsun 1200's in some countries. and the VW beetle in mexico?

 

Beetles haven't been made since July 03. T2's are still being made, though they've got less than 2 months left on them. Production of them is scheduled to cease on Dec 31st.

Anyways, pre FWD-Volvo's still are great cars to choose, they go on for ever, my 744 was like a tank.. I'm also feel a bit sad it's gone!

That's mine alright. The old Volvos are great but I feel they lost their character in 1979 with the redesign of the 200 series cars. I can still appriciate those, and I find a first-gen US-spec 700-series a really handsome car but nowhere near as cool as the pre-79 cars.

 

Driving the Amazon taught me that to really get the most out of your enthusiast car you need to drive it every day year 'round. Now with the 142 being stored for winter I dread having to drive my Astra.

Mine was a "1990 Ford Escort Hatchback" it was a pretty good vehicle I used it almost for a decade.

1990 Ford Escort, 1.9L 3-speed, 110 hp, only had about 57k miles when we bought it

 

It is a turd. Bought it for $400USD, plus a new battery. We managed to get it home before the old rusted brakes locked up, but upon stopping in the driveway, the left front brake caught on fire, and we spent the next 10 minutes with a hose on both front brakes. When we finally got the new brakes on, they were locked open, so my dad had to use the e-brake. Bad idea. The e-brake locked up 100%, and the car sure wasn't going far then. We had to cut the e-brake cable to ever get the car to move, and we can't afford to get a new one put in, so I've gone the last 2 years with the parking brake alone. Numerous other problems, but I won't go into that shopping list... It gets me where I need to go, that is all I care about.

That car is beautiful. I don't understand why you would get rid of it for a Kia..

First car was a hand-me-down from my Dad. A W140 S600. Still have it as a matter of fact, but its sitting on deflated tires and hasn't been driven in a year or two. Don't even know if it still works actually.

My first car is a '99 Jeep Cherokee Classic that I bought in August of 2007. Still own and drive it today.

Since I've bought it:

 

-Seats (front and rear) have been swapped out for leather seats from a '94 Grand Cherokee.

-Headliner has been redone in dark gray to match the plastic trim/dash of the interior.

-Overhead console with compass/trip meter/fuel economy gauge has been installed.

-Taillights from the UK (slightly different from US taillights).

-Upgraded headlights with heavy-duty harness and new lenses with a much better beam pattern. -Upgraded fuel injectors with 4 spray nozzles instead of 1.

-Factory cruise control installed.

-Pioneer stereo with Sirius Satellite Radio installed.

Triumph TR7. I learned to drive in it in the 90s. Very strange car. In many ways unbelievably awesome, in other ways totally awful. I unfortunately have no pictures but it did look exactly like this:

f*cking hated that damn car. Every couple of months it just ate the starter and I would have to replace it. But it had some good moments. It was brown with a white and gold formula stripe that went from the back window to the sides and all the way up to the front. Also had the Trans AM chin spoiler, side skirts, and spoiler.

Ford Focus 1.8

Not my actual car, just a random pic off of the internet but it's the same make/model and colour of what I have at the moment. I just passed my test last year and I've been driving for a few months now. It's a pretty good car, been in the family for a few years now and it's never had any big problems. Very reliable, the only bad thing is it just devours fuel like really bad. I don't have the privilege of taking it out when I just want to drive, pretty much strictly just for work. To be honest though, a lot of people I know have died in various car accidents in the last year so I really don't mind not taking it out often, the idiots on the road make me nervous enough.

I can't think of a better first car then the Focus, though the 1.8 isn't really an ideal balance given that it's no faster than the 1.6 and no more economical than the 2.0. Still a nice engine though and the Mk1 still has about the best handling characteristics of any FWD hatch I've ever driven.

I actually saved up to buy my first car.. it wasn't the best or most reliable but it lasted long enough and was a pretty awesome looking ride. I bought a 1983 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe that was quite used but I ended up working some kinks out and added some nice accessories and new wheels and such, including sport tires and all.

Except mine was primer gray and never got the chance to paint it. Finally the motor blew up but I bought it for $500 and it lasted me about 2yrs.. once it finally blew and I didn't have the coin to buy a new motor and everything, I did an even trade with my brother in law for his '91 Chevrolet Silverado Step Side so he could use the Thunderbird on a trade and buy an ew truck .. but the pick-up is still my favorite vehicle ever (Step Sides and that year model) that I've ever owned.

 

Sadly, this was so long ago, I never took pictures of my vehicles then, I was in my teen years and worried about two things at the time, women and partying. Here's a pic to show how my truck was, I tried to search for identical paint, wheels and all and this is about the closest I could find;

 

 

If you're going to buy a first car, make sure it's reliable. It doesn't need to be brand new but atleast get your money's worth. I'm not sure your finances but even now I have a decent bit of cash but I still won't get rid of my trucks and some bikes to get something new. If they're working and not broke, why replace or fix?

Yes, that's a pic of the one I want to buy. My dad sold it in 2004, and 5 years ago, I decided I would track it down when I got older. If I find it and can buy it, it'll be my first car. 5.8l 351 Cubic Inch V8. Loved the sound of it.

No, old XJs are pretty cheap. Even in Asia where European cars are generally a lot more expensive than in the EU/US they've a reputation for depreciating like a bitch.

Idk what I did. All I know is that I jumped my moms car and the next day I wemt to start mt car and it wpuld start fine. Run for a second and then die. And it would do that every single time. Eventually me and my dad worked out that the onboard computer was malfunctioning. And then almost immediatley after that it snowed like 10 inches and I was at risk of getting fined like $500 if I didn't move it. So I called a tow truck company and scrapped it.

My very first car was a 1981 Plymouth Reliant. Terrible. Vapor locked on me all the time, so I only had it for about 6 months before I couldn't handle how terrible it was anymore. What I like to consider my REAL first car was a 1972 Cadillac Coupe Deville, gold with a brown vinyl top and brown leather interior. I could seat 10 people in that thing comfortably. Bought it on my own for $1200 in 1998. I actually used to race it at the drag strip when I was in HS. People would get impatient and red light all the time... it was a 19 second car. Not too shabby for a 2 1/2 ton beast. I wish I still had a picture of her. Her name was Lucille.
