4X4 Tech, Meets & Crews

Are there any other people out there who are in to off-roading in real life, and have also dabbled in it in GTAO? If so I'd like to make contact, for some friendly trail rides, meet-ups, vehicle tech talk, etc. A little background...

In GTAIV, I was impressed by the off-road handling of some of the 4X4's. The Patriots and other 4X4's actually had reall four wheel drive--the front tires actually pulled. And they had fairly decent suspension travel. The problem was there was almost no place to get into any off-road action in IV, except for a few rock piles around the coastlines. Worse yet, the 4X4's didn't spawn in multi-player, so it wasn't possible to do any online group off-roading. So I was really looking forward to this feature in GTAV and GTAO.

Unfortunately it seems none of the 4X4's actually have four wheel drive any more--in GTAV/GTAO. At least, none that I have tried. I do have a Karin Rebel though, that I found, kept, and modded for off-road fun. I've been having a blast picking my way through the canyons, ridgelines, rock piles, etc. Yeah it kinda sucks because there's very little low-end torque, and the front tires don't pull. But its still kind of fun.

If anyone else is interested in this stuff and you're on PS3, please friend me, my handle is dtfiloso. It would be fun to do some trail runs as a group. Also, I've set up a crew, called BlaineCountyCrawlers (CRAL), that will be just for this kind of stuff. Join it if you're interested. I'm in to all kinds of off-roading. I like the slow crawl, where you're trying to pick your way through and over rocks and obstacles. Also like the hauling-ass Baja stuff. But it would have to be sort of a gentlemen's agreement on what type of wheeling any particular group outing was going to be for, I think. By the way, if there are already Crews or groups of friends already set up that are for basically the same thing, let me know. I'd rather join one already going than be a crew leader.

I would also be interested in hearing what anyone else has to say about the 4X4 tech and physics in the game. Has anyone found a 4X4 vehicle that actually has 4 wheel drive? Does it come with a certain transmission upgrade on some of them? Surely I'm just missing something. I mean come on, there are JEEPS (Mesa's) in the game--they Wrote The Book on Four Wheel Drive! Kinda silly to only have 2WD ones. BTW, looking underneath them there is no front differential, which makes sense for a 2WD car. But the Karin Rebel has a front diff, but still no 4WD. Anyhow if anyone has any good info about the "4X4"s in the game I'd like to hear it!

Wanna go wheeling?

This topic would be better in the other sub forum, for meetups and find a groups. Most of the trollies don't go into those.

I'm not an enthusiast but I'm always just messing around in the hills and sandy shores on my Akuma. Been getting pretty consistent in being able to hop rails and stuff doing wheelies. I know its not a traditional off roader but I still have fun. BTW on XBox so can't join ya, but you'd be hard pressed not to find others who do this exact same thing. I always see at least one or two other players hoppin around on the mountains in my sessions.

Yeah you're right it probably should have been in the other forum. Mods can move it if its more appropriate over there. But I did have some questions about the vehicles themselves--maybe I have put them in a separate thread. Thanks for the feedback.

The Karin Rebel and Canis Mesa off road are 100% 4x4 drive.
I can assure you.
The Sandking, both XL and SWB however, despite having a solid front axel / diff.
Is not 4x4. Which deeply saddens me D:

I'm on xbox, and go for off road convoys with mates all the time! :)

Are you sure? Where I'm from, 4X4 means all 4 tires turn at once. So far I've never seen the front tires of my Karin Rebel spinning. The front simply does not pull at all. And the rear diff sucks too--its an open diff most of the time, very seldom see posi-traction with both tires spinning. I think I'm on the 3rd level transmission upgrade.

I have heard some things about the rusty and shiny Karin Rebels being different in some ways. Mine is the shiney one. I wonder if the rusty one behaves more like a rear 4X4? If so I'll go hunt one down.

Perhaps that's it?

I have the rusty one.

One sure fire way to tell, is to find a nice ledge, nothing too crazy, just enough so that you can drop off and your front wheels won't touch the ground.

Then just accelerate slightly, front wheels will obviously spin if it's 4x4.

Tested with rusty Rebel, off road Canis and both Sandkings.

My Rebel is fully tuned, so if I drop the clutch you can physically see all four tire marks.

Looks mad, she's off chops when it's raining :D

OK I'll try to track down a rusty one tonight! And what flavor of Mesa do you have that's real 4x4? I only have a 2-car garage now but when I get my stimulus check I'm expanding LOL

No. They are not. Offroading is my joy in this game, and there are only 2 types of drive, FWD, and RWD.

Besides, because of Rockstars infallible logic, they threw away the 4x4 they had down in IV, to replace it with these imposters in V, and even then, sports cars outclimb them anyways. Lame.

CaptianBackwoods

The Sultan is AWD, 30% front 70% rear. I like Off-Roading but no 4x4 trucks suck, the Rancher may be 4WD, not sure bout the Rebels had a dirty one but never noticed it's drive.
