GTA V Movie Influences

Recommended Posts

vanhalendlrband

Hey everyone,

New poster I have been through all the GTA III games and upwards and played tonnes of the originals but never beat them.

I noticed some huge movie influences in this movie.

The movie HEAT immediately jumped out at me, not because of the bank robberies either, that actually didn't clue into me until after I saw the house over looking the city, pretty much bang on with the house that De Niro is looking out over the city with his woman in that movie.

I also could have sworn that they threw in the Bridge from Bridges of Madison County as that would be in Idaho I believe. I could be wrong about that, but definitely not about Heat, even the music is the same a bit.

There was one other movie I noticed but I have to play it again to remember, but those were the main ones I remember, the other one was a really big one I can't quite remember right now I'm still waking up.

Dan Houser is too much of a hipster to admit he watches movies. Even though GTA V and RDR were both influenced heavily by movies. Dan Houser is a hack and GTA V sucks!

Yeah RDR I remember was definitely influenced by the Clint Eastwood westerns, almost all of them I think in one if you ask me.

I forget which one Eastwood paints the town red but I think there was something similar in that game or the first Red Dead Revolver which I also played through on my Xbox Original lol.

I definitely noticed pieces of Unforgiven which is one of my favorites as well.

I didn't realize the GTA community was not down with the new game. I think its better than IV so far but I am only 30% the way through. Vice City would probably always be my fav. San Andreas was better but I like the 80's better than the 90's which I still think are continuing today as the music and clothing is virtually the same save for the early 90's which was just the 1980's fading away imo. Kind of like how 1980-82 were still pretty 70's as opposed to 83-86 and after.

Oh well we will just keep it on the topic of Movie Influences though.

This might sound (read) like a stringing, but I think the cop system works as an attempt to recreate the police chase scene from a movie called Drive. In GTA V we have to avoid highways and main roads, and the underground is always a good place to hide. I even heard that in certain missions, when you lose wanted level, and if you happen to stay too long in sight of some cruiser, the wanted level will back and they will start the chasing all over again. Always makes me think of the movie.

My first though as I saw the first trailer was Heat. I'm a big fan of it and was happy to see reflections of it in V. The mission The Blitz Play has a very Heat-esque moment too where you ram the Gruppe Sechs van with a tow truck. Similar to the opening scenes of Heat.

The jacket from Drive makes an appearance at the Binco shop in Strawberry. It's called the Champagne Driver's jacket.

The Mission "Blitz Play" is a homage to first heist from the movie Heat. Also, Michael resembles Robert De Niro's character from the movie too, even more if you give Michael a goatee.

You can equip the same clothes Jack Nicholson wears in the movie The Shining. It's available in any Binco shop and is called the "Overlooked Red Jacket". The name is a reference to the Overlook Hotel which Jack Nicholson lives in during the course of the movie/book.

Welcome to the forum!

First piece of advice: ignore members like 'Stockton209What'. They are just one of the many regular trolls we have around here who have nothing constructive to contribute other than..."gta 5 sux derp".

You get used to them.

To answer your question; it's not a movie, but 'The Sopranos' had one of the most heaviest and obvious influences regarding Michael. Dan Houser himself even admitted he watched the show.

Steven Ogg in the IGN interview told that the character of Trevor was influenced from Bronson (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172570/).

Yeah I noticed that too. That was one weird film. Pretty much explains Trevors crazy persona.
