I can only speak for myself, but I have created two characters on the same account and so far, have never had an issue with anything not saving.

Here's the rules that I follow:

When starting up, let the game go to story mode. Don't hit the X button (On PS3, not sure what it is on Xbox). Just let the game start and go to story mode.

Hit start to pause and go to online. Then, pick "Select Character."

Before finishing my online session, I make it a point to make note of my Character's rank, how many RP they have at the time and how much cash I have. Multiple players on one account will share a bank account, while each character can have cash on hand as well. I make sure to bank every dollar before quitting.

When done playing, hit start, go to online and select "End Session." Let the game go back to story mode and then hit the PS button to quit the game... again, not sure on the process for Xbox, but I always make sure the game is back in story mode before quitting the game.

Now, there have been times where I have gotten an error stating that the game couldn't be saved while I'm playing. This message will stay on your screen, just above the mini map in the lower left hand corner. When that happens, I simply keep playing and once the game is able to save, the message will change to "SAVE SUCCESSFUL." I've seen it take 30 seconds, I've seen it take 10 minutes.

When I'm ready to play again, I first log on to the Social Club to see if the notes I wrote down (Character Rank, RP, Cash) match what is shown in the Social Club. If they do, I'm good to go. If they don't, I simply wait until they do. Most times, they match rather quickly. However sometimes, it can take a little bit... Last Saturday took quite a while (as in, multiple hours), so I simply played Story Mode while checking Social Club every hour or so.

I also don't start playing with my other character until the character I played with first has shown to be completely accurate. It's a bit tedious to exit online, exit the game completely, start it back up, let it go to story mode and then going back to online, just to switch characters, but again, I'm wanting to make sure the progress I made with character #1 is updated and accurate before even starting with character #2.

The only issue with this is that, from my experience, the Social Club only shows the character which is highest ranked. I play my two characters pretty balanced, so it's easy to keep track of which character I played last, as I usually just add it to the notes I made. If you've played one character and ranked up significantly, it'll likely take time to rank the other character up so that this method works 100%. But, again, since the bank account is shared, if you make sure that one of the last things you do is bank all of your cash (just before noting how much cash you have and exiting offline) you should be good once the dollar amount on the Social Club matches the dollar amount you noted before exiting online.

Again, I can't guarantee that this will work for everyone and I'm sure some won't have the patience to wait if and when the Social Club doesn't update quickly, but this method has worked for me and I'd personally rather be patient and wait a bit, than be impatient and risk losing either of my characters.

It's kinda silly that we have to go through all of this to ensure our characters are saved correctly, but it is what it is... Hopefully, this method helps anyone that has had an issue going forward.

I have two characters, and switch just like nothing. I don't take any precautions, but then again never lost a character. I don't know. I just do whatever, and I'm fine. I have a lvl 70, and level 9.

I'm one of the lucky who has not lost a thing...maybe a few levels not saving but that's it. I have a second character and have had no problems with both. First ones lvl 56 second is 40.

Why do people make two chars? If I stuck with one char I'd be lvl 90 already. Reason I made mine was for the Audi and then just to rank up points for a crew

Like I said, I never start with my other character until I'm sure that the first one I used is updated, but hopefully, starting a new character in the second slot won't affect the first slot... In theory, it shouldn't but with Rockstar, who knows?

The bolded is the reason I check the Social Club first... If my RP and cash is accurate there, it should be fine on the game.

Personally, I made two characters because there were two slots available... I also thought it would be cool to have a male character and a female character. Many of the cutscenes are different, depending on if you have a male or female character.
