I don't know about 'special crates'.

 

But, if you wait too long, 'gun runners' will pick up the crate. I was actually getting a crate when they showed up, merc npc's.

special as in the crates that have 5000RP, $5000, the mini gun, and whatever else that comes in it.

i stopped messing with crates when i lost my assault shotgun i got from one

 

then i try to get another one and unexpectally start getting shot at (didnt happen on the first one) and died and lost my car and had to pay insurance (i did get the crate and it was only 2k in it )

i have noticed special crates dropping randomly instead of being triggered by previous crate drops. i'll pick up a regular crate every now and then, and i've seen 4 special crate drops so far. three of them were actually in private sessions (not sure if that has anything to do with it)

 

everyone i have talked to has never even seen them/thinks im crazy when i mention them lol. i would also like to know if there's a certain way to trigger them to drop though.

 

edit: oh i also got a tshirt for my girl that was not available to buy before. they are definitely worth picking up just for that reason alone. i can't believe how many people ignore them!

i didn't even have a chance to start driving over to it. a few seconds after the crate was dropped i went onto the map to put a marker on it and it was gone.

Oh, damn....haven't heard of the awesome ones with clothes/weapons included. I always get like $3K and some Rep.

 

And, yeah, I have no clue why nobody ever goes after them. Out of all the ones I've grabbed, only one time was I actually racing someone for it.

Yeah pretty sure they are totally random. I've seen one total between 3 characters playing at least 8 hours a day every day from launch. And I am constantly getting the regular crate drops so I don't think that matters.

Special crates appear for me as often as Simeon's special import/export. Not very often.

I'm level 47 and I've only seen crate drop announced 1 time and there was no marker on the map for it

Couple things since I go after these when they're nearby

 

1) NPCs will go after ones where there are places to hide/spawn. I've never run into them during a crate drop in a completely open area. however if there's a building to spawn around the corner or something they tend to show up.

 

2) Special crates give you a bigger heads up. Twice I've gotten them, one in a solo lobby, one in a crew only lobby. The text will be in gold. For me the first time it said a special crate will drop in 3 hours. This is prior to the 30 minutes (in game 30 minutes) it gives you the green circle on the map. So I had no idea where it would drop. Turns out the place I was standing was where it dropped, after I had left the area to get to a road for my dumbass mechanic to bring me a car. both came with 5k cash/rp and a minigun with 9999 rounds. Very fun for the short time you keep it if you're under level.

 

3) You do get a shirt and I haven't went and bought it yet, I'll see what it looks like then.

That's a great question - Special Crates. I've only seen them once, I was in a packed free roam lobby and they dropped three times back to back. I haven't run into them since after that.

Sometimes you get a golden message saying ''a special crate will drop in 24 hours'', and it keeps warning you like ''it will drop in 10, 5, 3 hours''.

 

 

I had one such message in a game of mine but it never dropped.

Special Crates seem random, and normal crates disappear when you let them lay around for too long.

I get $2000 and 700rp. not worth chasing.

the special crates never drop. just a green circle on the map while players waste ammo for half an past the drop time.

I'll get an alert for a crate drop every single session (I wish it was the same for Armored Trucks!)

 

According to my stats, I've picked up 18.

 

Only 1 of them was 'special' and oddly, it was the very first crate I went to. $5000 and the Minigun.

From what i can tell the drops are random. Sometimes special crates will drop, and sometimes ones with green, red, or gray smoke will drop. All random.

 

If you don't pick it up after a bit the guys you usually have to kill near it will grab it. It is just a way to make sure they don't litter the map too long.

Apparently rockstar is doing some type of event with the crates dropping limited time only items.. It was posted on their website today. It will be pointless if those items are just crap you can lose once you log off, but if its not like (special weapons, cars, clothes) that you keep,.. that will be badass it will be all out war for those crates

I missed my first special crate a couple hours ago, it happened at the worst time

 

I was starting a mission, I opened the text and accepted it. As soon as I accepted it I got the notification the Special Crate dropped SK it was too late for me to get it. I exited when the mission loaded and the crate was gone, sucks

I am guessing clothes. A friend got a shirt out of one of the special crates one time. I have seen him wear it too so i know he wasn't making it up because I have no way to get that currently.

so do the mercenary guys take the crate a few seconds after it drops? i thought id ask because the last crate that dropped the last time i played was gone within a few seconds of dropping. i was the only person in the session at the time.

I have a question, I've only seen once a "Special Create", the zone was highlighted in green and the message: 'The create will drop in 3 Hours' I thought, well 3 in-game hours is not much, but I was wrong, I waited and nothing. Are these 3 hours, real hours ? I think there's an error with that.

Never seen a special crate drop, ever. I have the platinum award for getting regular crates. And you get that shirt from when you get the "Salvaged" award, which requires you to loot 1 special crate.

Are these 3 hours, real hours ? I think there's an error with that.

 

 

I had that as well, just gave up.

 

Today a special crate actually dropped in my game, it had a minigun + rp + $, but you don't get to keep it so it's kinda pointless.
