Xbox One or PS4?

149 members have voted

  1. 1. If you are getting a next gen console, Xbox One or PS4?

Recommended Posts

Do a search for the Steam console, Otter. GTX Titan in there :) . The controller is pants, though.

And yes, given that Xbox 360 has native 720p, would have made sense to have 1080p native 7 years later. Or at least have 7200 RPM HDD`s, since those are dirt cheap these days.

Initially I figured I'd get both, then they announced the Xbox One.

Perhaps I'm being petty but no amount of U-turns are going to stop me holding a grudge against Microsoft for that slap in the face any time soon. More importantly, none of the exclusives look all that interesting to me. Titanfall? I don't get it... By the way, I haven't been following it lately but is the Kinect still mandatory or has that been changed too? That was always one of my biggest dislikes.

So it will be PS4 for me as I would like to have at least one next gen console. I've never bought a console at launch however and this will be no exception. Like with XB1, the games that have been announced so far just don't interest me that much and to be honest, from a technological standpoint, I'm just not that impressed with any of it. In fact the only game I'm looking forward to is MGSV which I'll most likely get for PS3.

So I'll get a PS4 in about a year or so - when there's some decent games and any kinks there may be have been ironed out.

I THINK they dropped the Kinect shenanigans. Key word is THINK, since I am quoting a memory that I am not too sure of.

Yes, you can completely switch off/unplug the kinect but you still need to buy one as it's a mandatory device.

DAT over delivering on value!

I don't think most people realize that the "Steam console" is in reality just a lineup of prebuilt PCs that Valve is going to offer with their own Linux-based OS, which you can install to a regular PC anyway, as well as replacing the Steambox's OS with a currently existing OS. They really are not "consoles" in the traditional sense, they're simply trying to bridge the gap between console gaming and PC gaming. And the high end models that feature components like GTX Titans are not going to be competitively priced with the Xbox One or Playstation 4, they are going to be quite expensive. You can't sell a prebuilt PC for $500 when it has a GPU that costs $1000, not even mentioning the other parts.

I'm not speaking out against the Steambox (on the contrary, I'm very much looking forward to it for the prospect of a Linux-based gaming OS) but it just truly is not a console.

Pat! Don't forget the Steam controller!

The controller is going to be offered separately and will work with Windows OSes just as well as the Steam OS. It's still not a console.

Edit: I do think it's a great looking controller though, and I think most of the people criticizing it aren't as familiar with it as they'd like to think they are. Look at some demonstration videos, read up on how it actually functions, and it starts looking more and more appealing. I'd also bet money on it being more accurate than conventional controllers that feature analog sticks since its trackpads are emulating trackballs, and we already know those are proven to be more accurate than analog sticks.

You are right about the prebuilt PCs. Technically it is not a console in the way that PS and Xbox are, but, as you said, they are trying to bridge that gap. Even Steam calls them something along the lines of looking good PCs for your living room, if I remember properly an article I`ve read somewhere.

As for the controller, that is a slightly different issue for me, because it will compete against mouse and keyboard, not analog sticks. I have seen this:

and I`m not so sure that a trackpad can be equally competitive with a mouse. I will stand corrected if that proves false in the years to come.

Ultimately, it tries to offer a "PC console" as a substitute for a PC. The idea is slightly complicated by the fact that it is not the only platform and, by default, some companies WILL NOT go to Steam: I am looking primarily at EA and their Origin attempt. Good idea, but works only with certain games AND the price will be horrendous for the Titan version.

No brainer for me. I love the PS exclusives, the PS4 is more powerful, cheaper, and they didn't start off this gen by pissing everyone off. PS4 it is whenever they release an interesting enough title for it (Watch Dogs and something else should fit the requirement).

Doesn't surprise me at all. I'm no Sony fanboy by any means, but at least they tried to be smart about it. Microsoft's approach was basically:

"Hey guys, we've made a new spy camera attached to a TV box so you can get all your sporting goodness. It also plays video games, *LOL* - if you're into that kind of thing but it can only be brand new games and you have to be connected to the internet all the time to play them. What, you don't like that? Well then f*ck you! This is the future, dog. Like we give a sh*t what you nerds think..."

Then a few weeks later:

"Oh sh*t, guys, we're really sorry. Please take us back - WE CAN CHANGE!!!"

Actually, having said that however, part of me actually preferred their former attitude. It was bold and unapologetic. Yeah it was a great big f*ck you to gamers and I definitely wouldn't have bought their machine but I have to say that I couldn't help admire them in a way.

Anyway, at the moment I see Sony as the lesser of two evils and at the end of the day, I'm looking to buy a games console, not some media box. I had a feeling that M$ had changed their stance on Kinect somewhat but as far I'm concerned, it's still not good enough. If they were to release a cheaper - non Kinect version then I might consider getting one later on down the line.

What about Wii U?

Ha ha, please...

I think the point he makes is that he feels it sucks and isn't really competition any.

PC.

None of them in my opinion has a good enough amount of exclusives for me to even want it. Most of the games on launch are going to be multi-platform so whats the big deal? It's also f*cking 2013 and most games will be rendered at 900p at 30fps, next gen my ass. I'd much rather build a PC.

Did you read the topic title?

The PS4 faq released yesterday was a little disheartening. 5400rpm hard drive? No SSD option? No external hard drives?

This may sound a little absurd, but I was hoping for a larger leap in technology. I think Apple has spoiled me in that regard. The iPad air is nearly as powerful as the Nvia Shield and it gets a decent update every year.

It also concerns me that the Xbone isnt capable of acheiving 1080p on some of these cross platform games. Doesn't that seem a little odd, given the day and age?

Edit - took a second look at the faq and can admit im being a little fatalistic :p - but i still feel a little underwhelmed. Anyone else, or is it just me?

I'm not trolling here, so please try not to respond emotionally. But i'm not feeling the same wow factor from this launch as I have from previous generations. Naw'mean?

I would love to inform you that it could achieve 1080p , the problem is that it's hard to program for just like the PS3 , wait for like 5 or 7 years and you'll begin to see it's potential

I don't think it sucks and I think it IS competition. I'll say this in the most non-fanboy way I can say it, because I don't want people thinking I'm nothing more than a Nintendo fanboy. I like all consoles equally. I just think people treat the Wii U too unfairly compared to Xbox One and PS4. I pre-ordered a PS4, but had that turned out terrible, a Wii U would've been my second choice. I went to Target, and there's was a display where you can actually play the Wii U there, I hope you seen one of those, and it wasn't really that bad. It was pretty good.

"Wait for like 5 or 7 years" is a really bad way to pitch a console when its competitor is already going to be reaching that potential at launch. Especially because the generation will be close to being over in 7 years.

I don't think it will take 5-7 years to achieve 1080p/60 fps on x1 tbh. The main problem here is that the console is just not ready yet. If it is released next year most of the games should be 1080p but the thing is, M$ doesn't want Sony to lead the console market (which is going to happen anyway).

And even if it takes 5-7 years, then it will be too late ,as we will probably be looking at Xbox (two?), and PS5.

They should have delayed it, never released current-gen version, and went for 1080P, or at least give a post launch graphics update.

They weren't that bad, I think they were like that because it would of f*cked up their plan for what they wanted to do in the future, but they were still assholes, I remember when it they said it would require an internet connection, this one motherf*cker said if you don't live in a good area "buy an xbox 360" I wanted to punch him in the throat and reach up to his face grab his eyes and shove them through his mouth. I was going to buy a ps4 before the xbox changed changed. I also don't game very much and the Xbox has some good multimedia sh*t.

Oh no , here in Saudi Arabia , Playstation World is forcing us on buying the PS4 with an over priced KZ:SF = 2100 Riyals instead of the promised 1800 Riyals , and no that's not the bundle that have two dual shocks

Xbox one is just a flop. Biggest flop created by Microsoft so far. COD ghosts can't even do 60 fps and uses 720p on the so called "next gen" console. Overall, it's an overpriced ugly VCR box that has no potential.

The PS4 on the other hand.....is completely opposite. Much more powerful, cheaper and more efficient.

PS4 for me, personally.

Not only have I been with Sony since the PS2, but their exclusives are far more appealing IMO and their optional PS+ service has been much better than Xbox's mandatory gold service. I anticipate this trend to carry over to the next generation.

With the poll results displayed here (~4:1 ratio in favor of PS4) and in numerous other internet polls, the PS4 is consistently being voted as the consumer's favourite console. Yet MS makes it seem like the XB1 pre-orders are on par (or very close to) that of the PS4's pre-orders.

OP, what are your reasons for leaning towards the XB1? Besides the exclusives, I really don't see a reason to choose an XB1. There's the sports integration, but you already stated you're not into that. Perhaps you're a Gamerscore hunter with your 360 and can't bare to see your achievement progress wiped? I'd like to know.

How is it hard to program for? I thought this generation of consoles are even easier than last gen? It couldn't possibly be as hard as PS3's SPE cores, they should be able to hit 1080P comfortably.

I'm disappointed with new consoles, was expecting a bit more, but they're trying too hard to be cheap.

There's complications with the ESRAM, but the simple fact of the matter is that the Xbox One's hardware is just significantly weaker. Both consoles are running on x86 architecture so the differences in performance really come down to the differences in hardware more than anything else. What I find annoying is that gaming journalism sites (I use "journalism" in this context as loosely as I possibly can) like IGN and Kotaku are desperate to downplay the differences in performance, acting as if the difference between 720p and 1080p is negligable. Considering that 1080p has literally more than twice the amount of pixels that 720p has, I don't know how it is in any way "negligable," but I suppose they're just trying to avoid pissing off Microsoft so that they don't lose any of their ad revenue. Of course, we've also got Adam Sessler, who earlier this year went on a rant about how these consoles should be striving to achieve 60fps/1080p and just a day or two ago released a video saying "well, come on guys, 60fps/1080p isn't that important, you're all just overreacting."

I find it disappointing that in this day and age, a film-based site is a more reputable source of video game news than most sites dedicated to video game news.

I think the best solution for gamers this time around is PS4 for exclusives, and Steam Machines for multiplats.
