Possible beneficial air race tweak?

Hey guys,

 

I was just wondering if any of you think it would be a good idea for air races to have checkpoints that go from the ground all the way up into the sky, seeing as crashes often happen when jockeying to get through a checkpoint.

 

Do any of you see any downsides to this that im missing? Seems like it could be enjoyable to actually take slight variations in altitude on your route and stay a bit away from others. These are particularly dull if everyone is in the same plane.

 

Obviously going under a bridge would be a standard check point.

Get a shamal and crush those little stunt planes.

Works like a charm, they are like mosquitos!

Hmm I don't really see any flaws in this, I suppose part of the fun is the whole mayhem, which I prefer. You don't have to touch the checkpoint, you get about 8m extra radius

I just wish they would make the races more difficult, but not by just making the turns more sharp. More like flying through small openings. So far I have never been in a situation in an air race that actually required much skill. The winner is just who cut the corners the best.

Maybe include a ceiling on races that go between buildings in the city, like at the top level of the buildings, that way you don't just fly above all the mayhem..? They definitely need to be a bit more flexible in my opinion. I don't mind the mayhem but it is just a slight anti climax to be in pole position and have some guy run into the back of your plane and crash you out on the final checkpoint.

oh and jet races are just ridiculous. the missiles will lock on to people even if your aiming reticule is nowhere close to your target. way too easy.

If they made the checkpoints MUCH larger this would enable people to take the checkpoints at varying altitudes/widths rather than that whoppingly monstrous Luxor/Shamal obliterating my fragile Mallard without remorse, when fighting to occupy the same miniscule point. Agree hard.

 

I don't necessarily agree with ground to cloud sized checkpoints, just a lot larger than the current size.

Yeah, we wouldn't want it to negate having to take sharp turns or anything like that. I just mean big enough that two planes near each other don't crash when going through would be nice. If everyone is in a mallard and you brake to avoid a crash, you've lost the race unless the guy ahead of you has a major mess up. If you don't break, you have a 50-50 crash with the other guy and who knows who will come out on top.

Even if you survive the collision, sometimes the wing is damaged enough to hamper your flying anyway. I really enjoy the flying races, but this little issue can get very annoying indeed, and I don't want the crashes eliminated completely, just reduced in number especially as the first checkpoint is always such a mosh pit
