Catchup is overpowered

Anyone agree?

I've been playing motorcycle race on The Commute with one opponent again. He tries to screw me, but instead he crashes himself quite early in the race. So I'm driving with no errors, of course leading all the time, then just before the finish line he gets behind me and with the help of slipstream of course wins the race.

I think to myself 'I'm never racing with this crap turned on again' so I turned it off for the next race. I guess he started a little bit better than me, but I drove without any errors for the whole race and couldn't get near enough to take advantage of slipstream.

Long story short: Catchup should be recuded and allow players to make small errors (late start or something along the way), but heavy crashes or being 10 seconds behind the leader and then winning is just stupid. Anyone else feels this way?

Nope if I crash my car into a wall I should still be able to beat you. Just like RL.

mmm chocolate

My favorite thing about GTA is the racing, and to lead the whole race and have someone beat you at the last 50ft is bullsh*t.

I hate slipstream more than catchup. Atleast you can turn it off.

At least you can turn it off.

Unlike slipstream. Or startboost. Or the lame physics when compared to GTA 4. These are real problems.

Aww, is slipstream too realistic for you? :panic:

I love how realistic it is! Like when I'm in an offroad race, and the guy in front of me is on a dirt bike, and I'm in my Merryweather jeep, and I use his slipstream to boost ahead of him. just like in real life!

Slip Stream isn't that bad. It adds a bit of thinking to the races. But it could be toned down a bit.

But CATCH UP is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. It slows down the front cars and speeds up players behind 1st. Its also RNG because it doesn't always kick in for everyone in the back all the time.

Factor in CATCH UP and Slip stream and players can hit warp speed. Which is insane.

Catch up can be nulled a bit by having traffic on or races with a lot of turns. But traffic also causes pop up/lag issues and mindless crashes.

And I don't even want to start talkin about the car physics where a tiny bump can pan cake flip cars off the track...lol

Finding good races has become a chore in GTA O. Even trying to find NON booster races with 1 lap short tracks have worn me down.

What is start boost? Or how do you do it? :D

Hit the throttle right when the countdown ends, not before and you´ll know.

It´s stupid because this time partial throttle inputs are good for powerful cars, or rain, and instead of feeding the throttle carefully to start nicely you just mash it.

Slipstream is ridiculous in this game. To the point where a compact car struggling uphill behind another compact car (at around 70 km/h) suddenly gets a huge boost. So huge that you can lift the throttle intermitently and still won´t lose ground.

It should only kick in at high speed, and only when you´re really close to the guy ahead, two car lenghts max. It should also give less extra speed. As it is now is just stupid.

but with catchup off and if you crash then you have virtually no chance of winning unless your opponents crash then that gives the incentive to make your opponent crash...so you know you will most likely win as long as they crash once. I did this just now...i made him crash in the very beginning and then i was always first the rest of race and won.

slipstream is just too overpowered... it should be toned down.

Don't forget about slip stream. I think you should be able to turn that on or off in the options too. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy racing with these things enabled at times if I want a more arcade like race. But if you could turn both off then it would be a more .... I dunno, sim like or propper race. It would just give the whole thing a completely different feel. And I would enjoy that.

Totally agree OP, worst scenario I've encountered is on 'The commute' race as well where I've been far ahead numerous times only to very noticeably slow down (even the engine sound confirms this clearly) approaching the final bridge. At full throttle, the guys behind me catch up so easily, use the slipstream and I've just lost my guaranteed victory without any real defence against it. What a waste of time as watching them gain ridiculous pace on me is frustrating.

Zigzagging doesn't help as it just result in a further loss of speed that the person behind can make up without slipstreaming and attempting to ram the other car is completely unpredictable and against my race ethics anyway.

LOL at people defending catch up. If you crash, you should lose, you shouldn't be rewarded for hitting a wall.

Exactly, if you can't make it through a race without crashing and/or you keep driving off the road and missing checkpoints, you have no business winning a race. I turn that sh*t off if I am hosting and if I join a lobby where I see it is on, I will turn on my mic and tell the host how much of a pansey he is.

ThatDutchIdiot

Just did a race, 3 laps on Dipping In. From the first corner I drove first the whole race and halfway through my last lap I suddenly slow down like crazy. I see the next few guys moving in closer and closer and right at the end the second guy slipstreams me, gives me a little bump which makes me completely miss the whole finish checkpoint. I finished as LAST in a 12 man race. My fastest lap was 15! seconds slower than the SLOWEST racer..

It's ok for me to give the last racer a small boost to get him back on track or to slow the first racer when his lead becomes insane, but at least allow me to accelarate again when there are 4 other drivers right behind me. The slowdown for the first guy seems to stay untill he gets overtaken, which is just complete BULLSH*T

As much as Catch Up annoys me, turning autobalance off, then stacking the teams pisses me off more. Since I started playing I have been in one match with even, numerically, teams, rest of the time it has usually been 8v5, 8v4, even had an 8v3. Even more amussing listening to the team stackers congratulate themselves on winning. Since leaving is considered badsport you have to stick around for the ass whoopin and then vote to go back to freeroam.

Yeah, slip stream should definitely be optional as well.

Oh man, I've had this so many times when I've had the lead. There are times when they are legitimately faster I'm sure but when I'm ahead and not letting up in the slightest, the only possible explanation is that they are genuinely going faster than me (regardless of base stats) due to catchup/sh*tsteaming
