Is there a "point" to GTAO?

I can't really think of another game that doesn't have at least some sort of story line to it. I know its not supposed to be compared to other classical MMORPGs but thats what it is kinda made out to be. They should put in NPC "bad guys" that play a role in the game and that have mission and story lines around them that you have to complete 1 mission to unlock the next that leads to a big payoff of some sorts. Make a corrupt police chief or big bad banker or evil lawyer(i know they aren't very original) a central bad guy that you strive to take out.

And if there is some semblance of a storyline in the paragraphs before missions start that i missed, thats pretty stupid. How long can this game go on with "get text from x, drive/fly here, kill 20 npcs, steal coke/meth/plane/van, as you leave trucks with more bad guys pull up, drive back to x, "now keep your mouth shut about this"."

People are waiting for heists but why? Most people replayed missions so much and already have the nicest house with 10 super cars so its not for the money. Do you really think they are going to be most in depth than the story lines heists?

The point is to get that bread fool. And keep yo mouth shut about it. I hate how our characters don't ever speak. Couldn't they at least hire one actor to record a few sound clips?

If you think of it more in a MP FPS type way it makes more sense. Have fun, levelling up should be a side effect of fun, not the main aim.

Wouldn't mind seeing something like this implemented :)

After lvl 40 or so, Three different Gang-Factions HQ (with different color) will appear on the Minimap (Special Icon/Symbol) after talking to Lester.

1. One Gang-HQ could be a Haitian Gang called "X"

2. Another Gang-HQ could be an Asian Gang called "Y"

3. And the Third-HQ could be an Italian Group called "Z" (No imagination on names, i know :D)

You can visit each HQ (Get a special Cutscene once per HQ), but you can only Swear Allegiance to one of them at a time.

When you have sworn Allegiance to one Faction, you will be assigned to a special Contact from that Faction, let's say the Italian Factions Contact could be called "Luigi" and you will be getting Missions and Tasks from that Contact to sabotage and destroy things for the other Factions.

Each Faction will also have a Store that offer Faction-specific Gear (Clothes/Outfits, Weapons, Mods)

As you have chosen an Allegiance, the other Factions will attack you on sight.

Whenever you sabotage or kill someone from the enemy factions, you gain Rep with your sworn allegiance.

As you gain Rep, the Missions become more and more important, rewarding and difficult, ever until you have Max Rep with your chosen Faction. Destroy Enemy Faction-Fortifications/Hideouts, Kill a certain Important Person from that Faction etc.

Even Tasks to Kill other Players (that are on Enemy Faction!)

When you get to max Rep with your chosen Faction, you will get a very special Mission to destroy the HQ of your Factions Enemy and kill their Boss.

Once you manage to do so, that enemy Faction will disappear from your Map, and you will own That HQ as a Property, generating Income periodically and giving you a certain Perk.

Each Faction offer different Perks.

If you feel you have chosen the wrong Faction AFTER doing a few Missions (you felt their contacts and missions didn't fit your flavor), you can change your Faction, by killing/sabotaging your own Factions Troops and Properties, until your Rep with that Faction becomes 0 again.

Then you could visit another HQ (they wont attack on Sight at Rep 0) and switch Allegiance so to speak.

You get a new Cutscene and join another Faction, get different Contacts, different Tasks/Missions and so forth.

Switching is impossible to do if you have done the Final Mission for a Faction, ie destroyed an Enemy HQ.

There's no turning back from that :)

Yeah you should be enjoying the deathmatches and survival, races etc. All the other stuff that comes with it is just long term fluff.

The point is to have fun, in whatever ways you enjoy.

Heard an opp got killed, watch me do my dance.

Got a pocket full of bills, watch me do my dance.

I just popped a pill, watch me do my dance.

Hit that nigga with the steel watch that nigga dance.

Well I wouldn't expect much more from this experience tbh, at least in the short term.

I mean heists will come eventually, but we don't know what form they'll take, and until more content is announced (or the content creator comes out and it's more fleshed out than I expect it to be) there isn't going to be much more variety than what there is now.

Erm, because they'll be fun ? I don't mind if they're the same as SP, as long as they're more like the first / last ones rather than the sh*t ones in between.

Can't wait to rob a jewelry store with my mates, plan the getaway, etc.

Plus, eventually they'll be more stuff to buy online. I'm fully expecting to be able to buy more than 1 apartment / garage as well as customise them. Then there's all the cars, of which more are going to be added. More weapons to come too.

Pretty sure R* will keep coming up with extra stuff for us to buy.... especially if they want their cash cards to sell.

From the opening sequence of meeting Lamar at the airport I got the impression that the point was a fresh start in Los Santos. Making paper however you can!

I agree, OP. There is no proper story, or "point" to GTAO. Not that it necessarilly needs one. I guess there are two ways it can be viewed. First, R* doesn't think our character needs a prefab plot, giving us the tools to invent our own. Sadly, the missions being what they are, your "invented" story better include being always and forever a two-bit hood that just does what other random criminals tell him/her to do without question. Or you can except that your character literally just does stuff in order to just to buy more stuff for no particular reason and with no particular motivation. Honestly, that's a pretty accurate discription of the typical American way of life.

Some of us, however, have more depth than that and will find GTAO currently barren and without point. Which is fine if all you need to have fun is have things to do (over and over again).

GTAO is really cool....u want story?....single player mode is great....online...well it still has all those missions to enjoy(plus heists soon) and also how many great times I have had creating my own storyline with my friends....we will do and 8 on 8 invite session and create our own scenario in freemode.....or some people have a character by themselves in freemode who is a car thief and he gets his kicks robbing cars in freemode while worrying that other players might foil his plans.....or you got a group of guys in cars or copters seeking out bounties...freemode is endless and in a two hour session who knows what crazy cool sh*t u might encounter...or who u will meet.....hey I even met one guy who was wacked out and his kick were stabbing prostitutes and taking pictures (sick f*ck)lol....but the point is creativity and what you can turn the game into.

Yes also the random player killers....lol....that's cool also....but I bet that will calm down after a while because all new players are excited and anxious to just engage in the streets....I have noticed that players that start to reach high levels are more calm and into other scenarios.

What's the point to GTA4? BF3? BF4? CoD? Ghost Recon? APB?

Play computer games. Blow up stuff. Have fun.

If you don't have the imagination required might I suggest this?

Since Rockstar wants to keep this going for a long time, making money can't be the main theme of the game and if it is, they gimped themselves within the first few weeks by making it far to easy to make money.

You seem to be in the 1% who enjoy RPing and have found other 1%ers to enjoy the game with. Does sound fun and i wish more people had your attitude about the game.

It would have been cool if they had something like generic Male/Female American/UK/Australian voices and so on.

There is a story...it's just down to you. It's basically about you (your character) arriving in Los Santos and trying to make it big.

A story would suggest and ending...and most online games don't end.

Are you talking about the online portions of those games? There is a reason they are called COD kiddies.

Are you more entertained by mindless, cliche action movies with lots of explosions and gun fights with close to zero plot or a smart, story driven movie( which can also have explosions) that might require having more than a 3rd grade education to understand? The first might be fun to watch once but as soon as you leave the theater, probably never think about it again. So far, GTAO is more like that except it was kind of disguised to try to be something different.

In my COD 4 days, the point was to find a decent clan and play other clans in organized tournaments. It was a bit more than 3rd grade education.

I guess we all make our own movie. Don`t like mine? Nobody is forcing you to watch... but you forfeit your right to insult, too.

You can always make your own plot. Sometimes when I'm bored I create my own plot. You wanna plan a heist well that's pretty easy to do. Get on leave your house and call lester on the way to LS Intl. Grab your first job and fly to it's location. I do this a few times trying not to repeat the same missions so it feels "right". Eventually once you build enough job points for lester he will reveal armored trucks. When I start getting them I stalk it. Waiting for it to drive to an opportune place where I feel the best getaway can happen. Then I pop it with the goal in mind of not being shot or seen by the fuzz (The clean getaway). Same can be done with crates if you rather do rons missions...least I think his missions JPs contribute to crates spawning. If you have a hard time creating a plot or story in this huge of a world where you can basically roam and play however you want then you lack a very important ingredient...IMAGINATION.

Those who think it is oh-so-clever to respond with "gee, to have fun. DUH!" themselves miss the point. It's a game. The point of any game is to have fun. Might as well inform everyone that water is wet while your at it. The spirit of the OP's querry was in regard to the games over-arching story (or lack thereof). I do agree a game should not reqire it, if done right, for fun to be had. However, without at least some vague backround plot or history, a game can be rambling and end up feeling directionless. Most likely a lot of people are perfectly fine with that, and that's cool. There are those of us, though, that figured after 5 years a developer might have come up with something a bit meatier, more polished and with more depth.

This. R* has given you a blank slate. Just use your imagination to fill in the narrative gaps. Your character is whoever you want him to be. What motivates him is up to you. The story writes itself, based on your actions.

You don't need a voice. You can express yourself through your appearance, what you drive, and how you act. Last week I played a couple missions with a random that just wanted to be a helicopter pilot. He'd fly us to missions, drop us off, hover around while we carried it out, pick us up and fly us to the rendezvous point to complete the mission. He even dressed like a copter pilot, with the headset. That is his "story".
