I still find it amusing how GTA V has a radio commercial that mocks the notion of relying on the cloud, yet it relied on the cloud with bad results.

The point was to mock those companies who are technologically inept but try to speak with authority on the mater. I'm reminded of a fairly recent t-mobile ad, in which a kid refers to the "almighty cloud"...*facepalm*.

Also, see this video:

I find it funny that it mostly tells me about problems with "the cloud" as I'm stuck in the clouds on the "cloud cam".

Because the cloud concept is actual very effective and practical in practice with many benefits in reality.

The irony.

i thought that commercial was subliminally trying to tell us that we're dead and in the clouds - playing gta online. i mean we're not constructively living; we're sittin on our asses playing this game - online - in the cloud that everyone's on... but thats just me.

edit: only for the time that we're playing the game. i don't necessarily believe this, however.

Thought I may have been one of the only ones who heard that.

the part i said in the previous post in the gta commercial "whered the cloud go?" i feel like that everytime it fails to save or a character is lost... very accurate commercial though right? at least gta commercials are honest... you get what you pay for in gta... even the hospitals dont lie about how bad they are ;D

and how the airport strives for "awful" instead of terrible ;D

the cloud is nothing but a stupid concept to lure in consumers thinking its some magical store place. I mean really, its servers holding information and gives it when you ask it to...

VM solutions (cloud) isn't too reliable for resource intensive applications or large amounts of data that is processed every second such as games. They should have just went with the classic dedicated servers across various server firms with redundancy built in amongst each DC. Like how other MMORPGs do.

The cloud is just a marketing term introduced when companies started offering remote processing to individuals and companies.

But it is in essence the client / server model with which computing first started there are some differences of course, but semantically it is just the same..

Originally you would have thin clients connecting to a mainframe over a company's intranet.

These days the thin client is a fully functioning computer in it's own right.

The Mainframe has been replaced by clusters of real or virtual servers in data centres

and the intranet has been replaced by the internet.

However the basics of what they now call the cloud were around long before they started using the term. Any web-mail company for instance (google, yahooo, hotmail) was doing exactly the same thing, they just didn't call it a cloud back then.

[edit] It is unlikely that R* is using its own hardware for this. I would love to know who is providing their cloud services. I wonder if it is Microsoft's Azure?
