  • 1 year later...

Well this is an old thread... But I'll reply anyways.

I have been friends with this GTA O player who is only 10. He doesn't use a mic, he doesn't randomly kill anyone or blow their cars, he uses a normal name for his username, yet people tease him for being 12. He's far from being a noob too. He rarely dies in a public lobby and he could complete survivals on solo while going rambo.

What people fail to realise is that they played gta while they were 10 but it was no problem because nobody knew. By saying children should not play GTA wouldn't that be unfair?

I always manage to join random missions with younger players, some of them a good, some are annoying as f*ck.

The content is definitely outside of what I would consider child friendly (most the hookers) but like many said before me, I played GTA1 when I was underage so who am I to judge.

I voted "Not sure" mainly because its a case to case decision.

I don't agree with any of your poll options. I do agree with your post however. I have no problem if a 9 year old wants to play GTA V. The problem lays with the parents. Does this kid know better? Does he know not to swear? Does he know not to repeat what he sees on tv? Nowadays the answer is usually no because parents suck. I've played the series since I was 10 and I've always remained level headed both in-game and in real life. I'd get slapped upside the head for spitting on the side walk ffs. Blame the PARENTS and the SURROUNDINGS not the VIDEO GAME.

This! My parents only let me play M rated games when they were sure I knew the difference between the game and real life. This is how it should be.

I would never let my child play any GTA games. I also wouldn't let them be online with mics with adults or be on the internet without adult supervision.

As a dad to an 11 and 12 year old boys, I let my boys play. With that being said, I watch how they play and what they say. Normally I'm playing with them in a closed crew or invite only session.

Given the subject matter of the game and the often obnoxious community, it gives me a chance to talk to them about playing as mature citizens. I talk to them about the squeaker stereotype and what not to do if they want to be taken seriously. When they talk about wanting to buy a car, we grind missions so they have to "work" for it. When they finally get that car, I'm completely honest with their appearance mods and offer suggestions to them.

With that being said, I do think I am in the minority of parents that is involved with their kids to know what the game is and that my kids know I have certain expectations of them when they play it. I'm not naive enough to think they never scream into the mic but I believe behavior like that from my kids is minimal.

I'm fine with kids playing as long as they are actually mature and if they have the voice of an 8 y/o they know not to use the mic. But the truth is, almost nobody is like that, so no underage kids on a M-Rated game please.

I think I said this in another thread, but I'll say it here. The real issue is mental age, and for 99% of the GTA0 population, it's pretty damn low. :p

I certainly am fine with a 13 year old playing GTA V. Just look at what is included in PG-13 movies. 12 year old kid is pushing it, but there are a lot of old souls out there. 11years old and lower is where I would draw the line.

Oh yeah I almost forgot; OP your answers are kind of lame.

The game is officially approved for 17+ year old players but i don't care if younger people play this game, at least if they have a bit of psychological maturity.

I think we have to consider that although the majority of us played games above our age rating when we was kids and so want to be lenient towards the next generation, we forget that kids today are very different to how we where.

These kids have grown up in an internet world where all information has become accessible and shoved down their throats even.

They are very different to how we where.. it's a different world now and I don't think we should cut them any slack.

Quite frankly I think 99.8% of them are c*nts and although it might not be their fault, they will remain c*nts in adulthood.

Clearly the age of maturity has gone up and therefore the age restriction needs to also. To about 20+

Either way there is no way to enforce such a thing. Perhaps if after so many people mute your Mic, r* investigate why.

Hell even some adults have the matury of a child, I have met some underage kids who are more mature then some adults i've see on GTAV.

Its mostly adults who will send you "Pu**y or Fa***t messages

Option 2 sums up my feelings. Only those moody overly serious 19 year olds feel the need to exert their 'maturity' in a video game and they feel embarrassed by the presence of kids because It's like babysitting their little brothers or something. I keep lobbies on mute generally because I find annoying people of every age play this game.

Many have said they played gta 1 as a kid, previous generation games/entertainment were in no way as graphic as today's entertainment, and really cannot be compared.

Let's look at some of today's programming, ncis; graphic imagery, hbo game of thrones, syfy channel is airing Spartacus , the Simpson's Halloween special.

Another point is children today have a unprecedented access too info, imagery and so on vs what was availble barely 20 years ago, heck I remember when the internet first started when I was finishing high school, they can and have seen much more than what we could. With out a fake I.d, ordering pay per view or snooping into there dad's pornography collection.

As always the key is parental guidance and monitoring, smart parents could hide a baby monitor inside there room and listen in, I guarantee there would be some stinging cheeks if they heard some of them online. (God it would be funny if a mom walked into the room while this kid is spouting of vulgarity, and profanity, and overhearing that tirade)

A previous poster said he plays the game with his children, that's a parent that gets it.

I will admit though after my first hour playing I turned my Mic too friends and crew only.

No one under 13 should play it without parental monitoring, Especially with a head set, I wish parents would monitor there kids, half the time the biggest trash talkers and foulest mouths belong too the younger player base. If my parental units had heard me say those things my a$$ would be stinging and console would be gone for at least a month.

The true problem is that some parents use video games as cheap baby sitters, they should monitor what and how there children play. I firmly believe violent games have no impact on future violence. However bullying etc has been shown as a gateway towards violence, as well as violence on small animals is usually a indicator of certain disorders and mental disease.

A previous poster said he was a player that played with his children online that's a parent who gets it. He is monitoring his children's play style and encouraging "good behavior."

The other social issue is that children's moral and ethical identity is still forming from the age of 08-12, our entertainment forms use great identifier for this, pg parental guidance suggested which is 13.

I agree with everything you said there mate :-)

As an aside, a squeaky child's voice is great to listen to when it's saying 'come play football with me, daddy ' but absolutely agonising to listen to when they're raging over nothing on GTA!

Let's say I'm not sure, because if they are talking I can just mute them and ignore what they're saying.

I usually don't mind at those kids playing and I don't even think that their parents don't care as probally they don't even know that their sons insult everybody with a particular reason.

In the end I don't really mind them as I just don't listen at them nor insult them as there's no reason to act in a idiotic way.

I'm no hypocrite. I was playing first GTA (London 1969) when I was really underage. Other thing is Online, but even here I don't think that these children are damaging anybody but themselves, it's problem of their parents. My voice chat is friends+crew so I can't hear them. And it's really no difference to me how old are they when I'm looking at them through the scope of Heavy sniper.

tbh.. I couldn't give 2 flying figs that children play GTA,I was playing 3 & Vice City (1969^^, etc..)at the ages of 8+... & id say a lot of people on these forums were also playing GTA from a young age.. So I don't really see it as a problem.. until they start squeaking their squeaker sh*t over the damn headset.. then yes child get out..
