How to get Tailgator from beginning race?

I've tried it and everything was going fine until my buddy couln't join my session because he was too high level I'm guessing, but even if he started a low level character, if my main character was high level how can I join back in and claim the car from my friend? What's the trick?

Just check the golf course every so often.

 

Don't make it your main goal or you'll drive yourself crazy.
