What's the point of owning a Custom Car...

...when 90% of online races are either set to Supercars on a simple circle/figure-8 circuit, or have Custom Cars set to off?

Kind of spoils the variety of car types in GTA when just about every race I come to is Supers on Down The Drain, Taking Off or Criminal Records. And the moment you host something other than that - an off-road race, or something with Sport Classics or Muscle cars? The entire lobby quits.

Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that all these Super races turn out the same way - crashes until someone gets away and wins.

your car is much faster. many races have custom cars on and in the future I would imagine almost all races will have it on

It's the Host's choice.

It's the Host's choice.

Then you start a race as host with your settings. simple as hell

People don't know how to host fun races in this game. Not really the game's fault, just people afraid to go outside their comfort zones. I for one, however, have no problem racing stock vehicles in races. There's more of an even playing field.

But I guess that doesn't really matter in a lobby full of randoms where everyone thinks they're driving battering rams.

Well, as of now the customization is rather shallow. Since we only have a few mod options for each car, it ends up that everybody has the same looking car, only a different colour. I'm hoping that R* adds more modification options for aesthetics, I don't really care for the performance boosting mods. It's GTA, not Gran Turismo. Anyways, getting onto the actual point of my spiel. Modifications adds a personal touch to your vehicle. That's the only thing I can think of. There's also the point of making your car more agile by giving it performance boosters. Making it stronger by adding armour will obviously prolong your life in car chases. These are the reasons I can come up for customization.

I know, most choose to leave it on

I like both races, with the right group of players.

If you get a race full of sore losers who spin you out when you're about to pass them, no race is fun.

I agree, the airport race is driving me insane. seems the only reason they race on other races because their long. 75% players do not want to play for fun but use the game as a competition to the highest lvl, its sad really.

Tell me about it. And the endless replaying of the same race. Some of the Point-To-Point races are okay but doing Down The Drain nine/ten times in a row is just stupid.

Whilst I accept that racing with stock vehicles puts everyone on a level playing field, consider this - I own a Tornado and a Penumbra, with visual mods and very minor performance mods. Chances are, they'd be woefully outclassed by stock vehicles in their class (Sports Classics and Sports, respectively). However, they don't appear in the stock car list for races either. So i've stolen and modded a car that would be a unique car to use in most online races and bam, I can't because the Host is afraid someone will beat him because they have a better car.

As it happens, I do understand the point of vehicle customisation in general. I was referring to vehicle customisation in GTAO, which is ultimately pointless because you can't use them in most online races due to Hosts banning them, or simply making yourself a target in Online free-roam for having the brass-balls to drive around in a decent looking car.

And sit there for 25-30 minutes as people either don't join, reject invitations or join, check the settings and then immediately leave? Haven't got all day.

My problem is most host races with catch-up on, I don't mind racing with stock vehicles although it is nice to race with your customs when others have nice custom vehicles also.

I find lobbies that have a variety of races and cars probably 75% of the time. I for one love off road races, but I'm also one that does "down the drain" over and over because I can easily make 50-100k in like 10 races.

Me and my friends all play on the sports class and we have custom cars on because we just race our sports cars for more mods and we usually get a full lobby with that.

When I drive my custom cars I destroy my buddies, so it's not really fair. Plus I actually enjoy just driving around in free roam with my cars more than I do racing with them.

Well now ya see ive found a solution to this problem:

step1:turn on your mic

step2:ask the lobby if they want custom cars and if so what class

step3:stfu its very simple

I race with my crew. We all have custom cars in most classed and we like to use them. We farm CR once in a while for cash but typically we mix it up.

Are we still pretending that performance mods apply during races?

about a 10 second difference on route 68 with my elegy modded vs and un modded one, yeah they don't apply.

I love my cars but have yet to get them tuned, just got my first six car garage full of all stolen cars but if i put custom on, i would lose and then not be able to unlock anything. Catch 22. ( i prefer sports)

I'm often hosting Custom SportsCar Races :)

But yes, many prefer the Supers

The answer would be to have 'custom vehicle only races', and to be able to search for them independently from normal races. That's what I'd like to see happen anyway.

I always rotate the car type in races, even when everyone votes replay and we do the same race multiple times it's always (if it lets me) in different type vehicles. I also don't notice people quitting over me setting the cars as I do, if they stay in the lobby at all they tend to stick around (not that people always stay, but the car type doesn't seem to matter, they even stuck around when I set it to compacts once).

I'm on free-aim servers, if that makes a difference, and I always race with Customs on, traffic on, and Catch-up off.

Race with friends - I'm loving the Muscle cars at the moment, my mate likes Supers, so we trade off - if people quit the lobby, screw 'em - set better times with less traffic anyway.

For the record, if I join a race, I stay in it, regardless of parameters (well, unless some douche has done the 50-lap thing) - I rarely replay a race immediately - I don't race 100% clean (it is GTA, after all), but I won't destroy myself to stop you passing me or go out of my way to wipe you out.

So we are out there, is my point. Keep hosting and as soon as you have even one or two opponents, launch it - if they quit, you get a free win.

You realise custom cars don't keep any performance boosts in online races?

You'll notice that if say you have a fully modded car which spits flames out the exhaust on free roam, if you select it in a custom cars enabled online race it's performance stats will be back to their starting point, and the exhausts won't spit fire.

I often drive around in free mode with the Sabre. It's fully upgraded so it's fast and it's fun to drive. The best part is that if it get's destroyed, it's only $187 on insurance.
