Paleto Bay Famous Hamburgers sign

Recommended Posts

lendot

Aside from a tiny thread buried on reddit, there hasn't really been any mention of this. I think it warrants further attention.

In Paleto Bay, there's a Famous Hamburgers sign, underneath of which is a smaller sign which contains the following text:

JD O

19390

J6 JEFF

FIGO

%0Y

I've been mulling this over for a few days now but haven't been able to make much headway on it yet. Some people have suggested it's just random gibberish, but my years as a software developer tell me there's actual data there. There are simply too many anomalies for it to be random.

Here's what I know so far. Googling the name Jeff Figo doesn't seem to turn up anything interesting. I also went through everything on the phone--eyefind search, checked every web page, went through every contact on lifeinvader, all bleeter posts, etc.--and couldn't find any mention of this name. I listened to all the talk radio programs as well. Again, nothing.

The %0Y part piqued my interest and was my first clue that this might not be random. It really jumped out at me because this turns up in a lot of programming languages; it's used when calling date-formatting functions to mean "display the year". It's a sufficiently unique sequence of characters that I find it unlikely someone would just happen to use it at random in the process of creating nonsense text. And while this does turn up often in software, it doesn't strike me as the kind of thing that would "accidentally" end up there as some stray artifact of game development.

One thing I stumbled upon while playing with the "JD O" part: there's a character in Liberty City Stories named JD O'Toole. Unfortunately I never played that game so I don't know if this might have any relevance to the sign. However, it does have me exploring the theory that the text of the sign is incomplete and filling in the missing pieces is the key to solving it. After all, the Dream View Motel sign right around the corner is missing a letter. Maybe that isn't a coincidence?

That's all I have so far. I'll let you know if I turn up anything else.

Some more stuff to add...

I tried applying the "segregate and rearrange" idea for the sake of due diligence. I ran anagrams on Jeff Figo (no results) and on the full set of letters in the sign (all I got were "Fed Jiff Jog Joy" and

"Def Jiff Jog Joy").

One thing I've been wondering is whether the haphazard alignment of the lines of text is random or intentional. The first line is left-justified, the third is right-justified, and the last two are more or less centered. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Let's suppose for a second that my missing-characters theory is true (I'm not yet convinced it is, but for the sake of discussion...). Signs like this generally have their text centered, so the alignment could be a clue as to where things are missing. The one hole I have with this theory is that the only remotely viable text I've come up with for the first line so far is "JD OTOOLE", and that seems like it's one character too long to fit on the sign.

A final data point to add. I was wondering if perhaps the content of the sign changes at all over time. Like maybe it "un-garbles" as prerequisites are met. I'm at 100% now, so I went back to a save I had from the very start of the game. It's exactly the same then. So if it does change over time, something else would have to be the trigger.

I'll throw in a couple of others I found early on in my research...

19390 is the zip code for West Grove, PA. I mention that only for the "Grove" part.

J6 is used as shorthand for the poker hand jacks and sixes. I didn't think anything of it until I learned that it's also known as a railroad hand because "jack-six-jack-six" sounds kind of like a train passing over tracks.

The thing that's frustrating me is I can't seem to find a concrete connection between the game and even some small part of the sign. This is leaving me open to the possibility that this might be a red herring, but I have a lot of doubts about that. I've done a fair bit of work with crypto and with reverse engineering file formats, and one of the side effects of that is I tend to look very closely whenever I see stuff like this in games/TV/movies where they've mocked up cryptic-looking data. More often than not it's so I can chuckle at how little they resemble real-world scenarios. Usually when people, especially non-technical people, are tasked with creating gobbledigook for these media, they don't put a great deal of effort into it and that leaves telltale signs. There tend to be certain patterns and uniformity across the message that one doesn't typically see when working with this kind of stuff day to day.

This is different. I've dealt with real-world data formats that look very much like this message. We have strings of pure letters, strings of pure numbers, and strings that mix the two. The strings vary in length. There are immediately-discernible parts ("JEFF") combined with parts whose meaning is unclear at first glance ("J6", "JD"). Right off the bat I'm reminded of the X12 data interchange format, which has all of these elements right down to the use of J6 and JD to mark certain fields. I should point out, however, that X12 is primarily used in things like the medical field and when looked at more closely, I believe the similarities to that particular format be nothing more than coincidence.

All of this combined with the location of the sign, the fact that its content is so obviously out of place, the haphazard alignment of the lines, and the very curious use of "%0Y" leads me to believe there are simply too many anomalies for this to be nonsense. If it is a red herring, it's a very elaborately-constructed one most likely done by a programmer or someone with similar experience. It's the kind of thing I would create if I wanted to send other computer professionals on a wild goose chase while leaving most average people to write it off as random garbage. I have to admit, I do find a certain whimsy in that idea, and I wouldn't necessarily put it past Rockstar. But why bother? Coming up with something like this would involve a fair amount of thought and attention to detail in every way, and to what end? To throw off a small(ish) subset of people playing the game? It just doesn't seem to add up. I'm not aware of any precedent for Rockstar going to these lengths elsewhere in their games. If anyone knows of such cases, I'd love to hear about them.

On the other hand, if this is in fact a legit message, given what I know (or don't know) thus far there is that possibility that it might only be decipherable by a smallish subset of the gamer community. That leaves me scratching my head as well...

I'll know it when I find it ;). That's what really intrigues me about this sign. I don't know where, if anywhere, it leads.

For me the real gratification is the path to solving a mystery. The payout in the end isn't really that important. I'm fully prepared for this to turn out to be something rather anticlimactic like the morse code in the hatch, and that's totally fine as far as I'm concerned.

It's really awesome that so many people are immersed in the search for UFOs and jetpacks, but given what Rockstar has said about the quantity of easter eggs in this game, I feel reasonably certain there are still other things that haven't been discovered. I'm trying to keep an open mind and not get caught up in an "anything that doesn't lead me closer to a jetpack is of no use to me" mindset. And if it turns out that I'm the only one foolish enough to go on this possibly quixotic search, I'm not wasting anyone's time but my own and I'm getting more than my money's worth doing so ;).

When I was in the Navy, I was part of J6, J632 to be specific which at the time was the Information Technology Support Division of the United States Atlantic Command Headquarters. Now it's Joint Forces Command Headquarters, I think it's closing or closed now. . When I worked there it was in a giant building called NH-95, it was a huge concrete building with no windows.

Anyway, when I saw J6, that was the first thing I thought, but immediately dismissed it. Funny that you posted it.

just thought I'd share that. I came across this sign and google brought me here. No new leads on it?

EDIT: West Grove, PA 19390

Interesting, please keep us updated, however id stray away from the JD O Toole part, he was a rat in LCS and was whacked. He was kind of a minor charcter aswell.

Isnt this the sign thats supposed to look like the mural eye somewhat?

first of all,.....what do you expect to find ???:yawn::yawn::yawn:

A hidden message, we have to figure it out didnt you read his post? You just want the answer is it? Something flagged this as significant to him as a programmer, and i fully agree there is something fishy about this jumble of letters for no reason on this sign, and im pretty sure some people in the Decode thread have discussed these letters before with no resolve.

You should post this in the decoding mount chiliad thread it wouldnt be the craziest post in there today by a long stretch.

Did you see the labeling in there? It's totally f*cked. It's not a mistake, you would have to intentionally f*ck it up that bad. It means something. it may not be related to the sign, but I bet it's related to something.

I also spent a great deal of time drinking and looking at this sign It seems most visible from 1600-1700. I am almost positive that the % sign is not a % sign and that the G in FIGO is actually a O.

I went to the west end of Grove street and we found a door on apartment #15 with a hole cut into it and you could kind of see in there, not much else.

I did a live stream of it if you care to here me ramble about bullsh*t. twitch.tv/nextonex/profile the video should be up by now. I didn't have the chat overlay going, but there was only a couple peeps in there. I tried to repeat the questions they asked, but it was late, and I had a couple lime-r-ita's by then. I got the audio stuff worked out and had to restart the stream, so go with the latest video if there is more than one.

This sign puzzles me. Not just the jibberish, but the fact that there doesn't appear to be any place nearby selling hamburgers. The sign is in an empty lot.

I'm still pondering this.. The sign looks alot like the eye, it's for a hamburger restaurant that doesn't exist, and there is a message in code. We can't just let this die. There are alot of smart mofo's on this forum, if we put some effort into this, we could figure it out.

I'm still not sure that there is a % sign there, but it seems to make sense. I do think the G is an O though. and JD may be J0. It seems to look slightly different depending on the shadows falling on the sign.

The writing in question: http://rsg.ms/MoxI01

The Famous Hamburgers lot: http://rsg.ms/MoxPsr

But something I noticed while I was there; in the promo screenshot the one of the sign: 1.jpg

The sun is rising at an impossible angle in this screenshot. It rises to the left of Chiliad not the right. I was just there to take the pictures, and I got there in the morning, the sun is never in that position from that angle.

I was thinking maybe it was just the letters that were left from the sign when it was last updated, before the hamburger place closed, if it existed, but none of that made sense, especially starting with JD and having all the numbers on the second line.

It's not hex because the letters go past F.

I'm still looking.

EDIT: I was also looking at the in game paper map, trying to make something of the letters across the top and the side. I haven't been able to come up with anything there either, but if someone else could take a look too, that would be great, I may have missed something.

I thought exactly the same thing but then, this is probably part of Rockstar's critique on modern culture. The burger bar goes bust and is demolished (it looks like it was a drive-thru) yet they leave the sign.

Back on topic, the little sign with the gibberish looks like it belongs in a church......

I think you found something here. Did you notice he has a song called Tsunami and Ode to a sign?

Nice job!

EDIT: and a song called Atom and Eve? Even if it's not related, this guy is interesting.

Gents, he's tweeted the following within the last few moments also:

Some people say there are a lot of hidden messages in my music. I say they're artistically woven messages. http://m.youtube.com/user/JeffreyJacksonMusic?desktop_uri=%2Fuser%2FJeffreyJacksonMusic

@SaveableOne I was asked not to share anything specific. This might help though... http://www.secretcodebreaker.com/keyword.html

And a bit longer ago..

Every song is a bingo card or lotto ticket. Just waiting for the right set of ears. One day my hard work will pay off.

Interestingly this is all very reminiscent of the epic Easter Eggs in the Treyarch Zombies campaigns, there was a lot going on with messages within the music there and a lot of talk of ciphers and encryption. I've only just signed up because this has piqued my interest but i've been following the Chiliad mystery since day one, i'm going to start listening to his stuff from around the launch of GTA5 and onwards to see if I can spot anything.

This could be a big leap towards something huge, if it's encoded messages within music from an artist noone's heard of who's been asked not to share anything but has shared a link to a page regarding ciphers.. this had better be worth it.

Game on!

Also, to add to that, it's pretty clear the cipher that needs decoding is from the sign itself

JD O 19390 J6 JEFF FIGO %0Y

For anyone that hasn't used ciphers before the link he has tweeted helps massively even if you don't understand them. Basically, a sentence has been written in plain english (presumably) and then encoded into the mess of jumbled up letters we see above using a keyword as a reference for which letter is replaced by another letter. What we need to do is either find the keyword, or stumble upon it using pure guesswork, and keep bashing the "decipher" button on that page to reveal the message.

Right.. just found something, don't know what i found but its something i think?

Jeff tweeted a picture of him sitting on a bench. I managed to work out from the mini map he was sitting at the bench in front of St Brigid's church in Paleto Bay, so I raced there as Michael to see if there was anything suspicious. He wasn't there, just some random woman NPC. I wandered around for a bit hoping to see his character somewhere, nothing. But when wandering around the main church sign I heard the weird organ music playing at precisely 6.56pm, moments before the church bell started ringing at 7pm. Not sure if the music means anything but it stopped when I moved away.. to see the sign actually said closed Sundays. It's Sunday on my in game clock. D'oh. Going to hang about and see if anything happens or if Jeff's character appears...
