I'm shocked by how bad Vice City feels today

Recommended Posts

GTA Vice City is now 12 years ago, normally it's old now. But, first time, when I played this game (far in 2003), it was new for me. I am still playing GTA Vice City sometimes and I will never stop playing it.

I felt like this about vice city a month or so ago exactly as the man says. But i didnt know a thing about mods and installed vice cry. Honestly dudes, whilst it may add some stuff what it rebuilds looks like rockstars textures but high definition and the half built statue at malibu is now fully built! i dont see that as a bad thing.

Try it out.

No way! The handling of SA is much better than VC.

Well, some cars that exist in both games handle better than SA. :D

Car handling is a pure disaster in VC but that one goes simply to poor gaming technologies back in 2002.

Cars in VC have similar handling than in 3. Which makes it very hard to control because of turning sensibility is too high.

So you can`t even compare VC vehicle handling to SA

Meh, I always preferred the handling in VC.

Vehicle handling in VC is almost the same like it is in 3 with a little more weight and control to the vehicles. But like i said the steering is too sensitive so you really need to get used to it otherwise you`re going to crash all the time.

I still remember how i had the nauseating feeling when i frist time played VC AFTER SA.

You could compare vehicle steering in VC to the steering of some really fast bike in V like Dinka for example. It is so sensitive that you need to move analog stick very carefully by milimeters..

Just look at the handling of firetruck in VC and SA and you will find a huge difference. VC handling cannot be compared to the awesome handling of SA.

Since I started playing VC again it made me realise how much missed it. The lack of basic mechanics introduced in that later games kind of annoys me, but it can be quickly forgiven. Collecting hidden packages is awesome because you actually get rewarded. I spent almost two months grinding away in GTA IV to collect the flying rats and the letter scraps in GTA V yet the 30 packages I've collected in VC so far have already felt much rewarding.

Overall I just like in VC I can run around with Tommy and a chainsaw in hand and it doesn't feel wrong to do so whereas in GTA IV and GTA V it feels a bit awkward to do something similar given their more believable worlds. I still love GTA IV much more than GTA V though. HD Liberty City is a masterpiece.

Anyway it feels great to get back to VC. I'm really excited to build a criminal empire since it's been a few years since the last time I played through the entire story. :)

VC was really a masterpiece in 2002. After boring story of GTA 3, the VC felt absolutely awesome. I`ve played it for years before i got bored of it. But yeah of course today will look crappy. Not to mention the soundtrack which was the best out of any GTA so far.

But i want to know why so many of you enjoy so much colecting those packages? It felt so boring to me, i`ve only done it once for 100%. Why is it so rewarding? You get weapons at safehouses but you`ve got more than enough money to buy all the weapons you need. It`s easier to do anything else and get money for buying guns than spending hours and hours colecting those packages.

Those packages (or red ballons, letter scraps and spaceship parts for that matter) were a complete nightmare to me. Boring and time consuming activity which took you more time than completing 20 missions or half of the game just for a few guns outside my house?

I don't think it's as bad with VC given the smaller map size. With GTA IV/GTA V because the maps are much bigger it's more tedious IMO to collect equivalent collectibles. As for the rewards yes you could just buy the weapons techincally, but it's pretty cool going back to the hotel and seeing all the different icons for weapons you've unlocked.

I miss these kind of rewards in most new generations games. Now it's all about achievements/trophies. The last modern game I played which felt truly rewarding was Saints Row 2. It's a shame R* have kind of lost their way in this respect as much as I adore GTA IV.

Well to be fair, you might want to look into the SilentPatch and a few other fixes for the PC version of Vice City since Rockstar's porting job wasn't perfect and had some less than stellar graphics as a result. Even then, Vice City is dated, but the atmosphere and general eighties-ness of it still holds up if you ask me.

I've just started playing the games from the GTA III Era again and I was just stunned when I found out how well they've aged, they're definitely still fun and playable in my opinion.

Exactly, the only encouragement for doing them nowadays are the trophies and achievements, and collecting them just feels like a chore because of it.

Well i tried it last year (along with Max Payne) and i was a bit affraid that i might spoil my nostalgia overwhelmed memories but i was surprised how well the game looked and played. I mean all the game mechanisms felt just right and well balanced, the story was even better, the atmosphere was as good as 10 years ago... I also used the Xbox mod so i appreciated all the little details and changes.

For a while I was parallel playing IV and VC, and it was still an enjoyable experience. Some of VC's mechanics are indeed dated when compared to IV's. :)

Cheers.

I am afraid I won't finish Vice City ever again. This game has just aged horribly. The graphics are shi t but that's not even the problem. The game is just too damn fast. the cars, the way tommy runs... It's not realistic

plus the shooting just doesn't feel real, there is no impact of the bullets that your opponents... no covering system and so on. the gameplay is just horrible to gta IV and V's standards.

I don't get this "dated" talk. Vice City is a game that has a great story and also it has some graphic effects that were missing in San Andreas but brought back in GTA IV. Also, this game is obviously not for you if you don't like arcade games. While GTA III and Vice City perfectly represent that arcade aspect, GTA IV is more on the simulation side of the spectrum. San Andreas was the perfect mix between arcade and simulation.

If you still can't get over the graphics aspect of the game do yourself a favor and turn your graphics panel settings all the way up, buy a 4K screen, download this and that and boot it up again. At least for me this looks good enough and it also works perfectly fine on recent computers with a few simple tricks.

You know what feels bad today about VC?

The map

The map is just the worst in the series, has a lot of vacant spaces, huge spaces without nothing, a beach big as a desert with nothing in there, a stadium protuding in a ugly manner on the side of the map, generic ugly buildings and a lot more of things i can't think right now.

It definetly feels that R* was short on time when creating this game, because liberty city didn't have this kind of problems, otherwise Tommy and the history are really good and is one of the reasons i am conflicted in what gta to put in my favorite category.

That's because GTA VC was in development only on 9 months.

True. The map IS beautifull. BUT, the beach near Hyman Memorial Stadium shouldn't be there, and the Beach in East-Vice City is too large. It's like 1/3 of the complete island...

I don't know. The graphics aren't that bad IMO. I still play VC, SA and III, switching b/w them time to time. Sure, the map is distorted, but it's a 12 year old game...

If I could find a PS3 A/V cable, I'd play VC on my console, but I can't so I was stuck dealing with the iOS interface...

I forgot the charm of the '80s throwback. That's a big part of what made VC so goddamned good, combined with the AAA production values and what a visual stunner it was when it first released.

Sure, the technical merits are pretty lame when compared to GTA V, but the story was good, the city's on point, and obviously the music/atmosphere is the big seller.

I'd love to see the whole concept reproduced with GTAV's level of technical brilliance and modern hardware... Or a '70s vibe Liberty City.

Vice City has aged well. Far better than San Andreas, which was a disaster of a 'game' in 2005 and will be in 3 weeks time.

The camera is a bit wonky on foot but in car its better than Andreas. In Andreas I kept putting the left analogue stick up, to see a bit better. Vice City is a bit more elevated.

I could go on a long rant as to why San Andreas is one of the worst games I have played.

I think it's just a case of your memory making it seem a lot better than it was mixed with just going from V, the newest one. Like if you drink diet coke for ages then have a sip of normal coke it tastes a lot sweeter than you thought it was because you are used to the flavourless. But in this case it's reversed.

At the time it was the best there was and we didn't know any better. Now you do so it may seem worse than you remember.

It isn't so bad. It's just that Vice City doesn't seem as good, because most of the games we have today are better.
