Random bounty

My cousin and I were playing online last night. I randomly got a 7,000 bounty put on me. And then he got a random 1,000 put on him. We were in a private room, which is what makes it weird. Can players search random people and place bounties? Is this maybe something random Rockstar puts on people? It just said unknown, you took my car blah blah.

NPC's can place bounties on you if you steal their cars.

What do you mean "private room"? People can only set bounties on people they're in the same lobby with.

He probably means that they were playing in the invite only session. And yeah, it was a NPC probably because they stole his car.

I thought you can only set bounties on people you're in the room with (via interaction menu), but if that person leaves, someone in a different room can CLAIM bounties on that person?

As you stated yourself, you got a text message from the NPC that owns the car you stole. If you are in a private room with your cousin, just wait half an hour for the bounty to wear off. In fact, if and when you survive it, you get to keep that same amount of money. If you go offline and back again, or switch rooms to a public game the bounty follows you.

I started killing the people I jack expensive cars from and my number of random bounties have gone down by a lot.

Nope. You're right about having to be in the same lobby.

 

However; NPC's can set bounties on players. Usually for stealing expensive cars.
