How Exactlt Do Player Blips Work?

OK, so I know that you can see other players on the map as a red blip (if they're on the enemy team). But today I played a mission where it was me against another guy to steal the drugs on one of those missions. Sometimes he appeared on the map and then other times when I was racing away from him, he'd seem to come out of no where and appear on the map once he started firing on me.

 

Is this a minor glitch/bug or some kind of "stealth" feature? What do you make of this?

It's a game feature of Death Match - so probably also in PvP missions.

 

Stay quiet and stealthy and you don't appear on the mini-map.

 

Walk in stealth mode and you won't give away your position. Jogging and running makes noise, as does gun firing.

 

The blip only appears when noise is made and louder noises affect a larger area.

 

All very good stuff. (Wish they applied a related system to free-roam.)

On this note, I have 100 stealth and wondered if in free-roam can doing this make you not appear on the map either? Or is the only way via Lester?

I'm really not sure. The example that I talked about, the other guy was in a car, so I'm not sure if it applies here. I don't often not see a player blip on the map in any mode.
