Questions about 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th characters in extra slots

So we have the option of creating more characters, up to five I think, so how exactly does this work - and why are some of the slots locked? How do they unlock?

 

It is obvious that the new character will start at level 1, I have read that money is shared between all characters - but how about unlocks? Will they pass on to the new character, or will I need to perform the same unlocks for the new character too?

 

Reason I'm asking is because I'd like to start a second character (so I have a male and female) - I don't mind levelling it , but really don't want to go through all the unlocks again!

I don't know how to unlock the other 3 slots, I am curious about this too. But no, your unlocks don't carry over, only your bank money does.
