When falling off the bike?

Recommended Posts

It looks really stupid, and unrealistic, at first I thought it was cool, but now it is the most annoying thing in the world, considering on most motorcycles you knick something and fall off literally every 15 seconds... it's so damn annoying, and it looks stupid because you fly like 45 feet in the air.

what do you think happens when you hit a car on a real motorcycle. Nothing is holding you on it and you are gonna fly pretty far

Yeah, I know, but you have to admit it gets a little unrealistic, just look at it. And it happens way too often at very low speeds.

I haven't seen a whole lot of the game, but I did make a mental note about the way "Tommy" flies through the air when he's knocked off a bike.

To me, it's somewhat like Mortal Kombat I and II animation (Street Fighter II also did it alot). When you get knocked down in that game, say by an uppercut, there are 3 or 4 frames used for the character - some where he's laying flat, some where his knees are a little bent, some where his hips form a right angle with his body.

These three or four frames are used over and over again, in many situations. The way the body bounces in that game when it hits the floor can be broken down into "punched in the jaw" frame, then "reclining back frame" then  "lying vertical" frame, - then when the body hits the floor, it momentarily switches back to "reclining back frame" as the body coils up after impact, then flattens out to "laying vertical frame".

In other words, they find ways of taking frames that are claerly meant for a specific purpose, and recycling them in places that "sorta work", and they get away with it by making it go fast. That's what they do in GTA:VC in the case we're talking about too.

When you get knocked off the bike, if you watch carefully, sometimes his body is in the exact same position as when he's sitting and driving a car, only upside down and facing the wrong way, and sometimes, he's lying down, and sometimes he's actually standing calmly (once I swear he made impact when he was in this standing calmly frame, and he just kept on walking - never fell despite being flung 30 feet in under a second).

It's not terrible, but the rigidness of the frames makes it look kinda fake. The speed definately helps, though - conceals the recycling frame technique to a degree, and makes the impact that much mroe brutal.

EDIT

Oh, and if you're really into those kinda details about the bike, you can wheelie (which is about as smooth a range of motion as you can get), you can bail off the side of the bike, you can bail off the back of the bike (if you're not going too fast, you can land on your feet, otherwise you fall and take dmg), and they give you different mounting animations for getting on at the side, the rear, and even from the front of the bike (that one is totally kung fu like - he just vaults/leapfrogs the handlebars from the front, and lands perfectly)

Yeah, R* loves detail. :)
