An Open NAT fixes most connection issues (getting kicked, timed out)

I used to have a moderate NAT and would constantly get these issues (getting kicked, timing out of sessions). I recently made it open and I have had a much better time in GTA Online.

To check your NAT on Xbox go to system settings, network settings, test connection.

An error will come up if you have a moderate or strict NAT. No error and you should be good.

On PS3 you need a "type 2" connection for your NAT to be open.

Hopefully this can help someone who is unaware of the effect of your NAT. If you dont know what NAT is, google it.

How do you change your NAT type?

There are different ways to do it I believe. The specifics depend on the router/modem setup you have but basically you have to open up ports for your console to use. Im no expert on it but what I had to do was open up ports on my router and set a static ip for my xbox and computer. Its slightly complicated but do-able if you are patient enough to read up on how to do it.

id suggest googling it to learn more. its definitely worth it as it will make all other games more stable and make it easier to find games aswell. May even make your connection better too.

Even with a NAT Type of 2 it's not guaranteed that you have no problems. I have Cable and DSL, on my Cable modem I can't really adjust the firewall much and since I have an IPv6 with that (IPv4 over tunneling, since Sony AND Microsoft are very sh*t with IPv6 support) it becomes quite complicated. I had a NAT of 2 but I found myself being alone in every single game, there was no way I could play with more, the only way I could play was by turning the firewall off completely, hence it's still blocking some important ports apparently.

With my DSL line I have NAT Type 2 as well, firewall turned on and everything works completely fine, even without opening ports or anything. Therefore the NAT Type isn't a good indication to go by, it can still fail even with NAT 2.

If the router allows it, putting DMZ on the PS3/Xbox IP is the best way to go really, if that's not possible on the router/modem then by either setting certain ports open or by turning the firewall off.

this is very true. My downstairs xbox has a moderate NAT and I have trouble connecting to some friends and the load times are much longer compared to my upstairs Xbox which has an open NAT (DMZ) and no problem connecting to all my friends.

I have only played it on Xbox but making it open definitley fixed majority of my problems. I also did the DMZ thing for my xbox so maybe thats why. but yeah Im a noobie in regards to this stuff tho so you'd probably know more then me.

But regardless, making your connection type 2/open is gunna be way better then not having it open. It fixed my issues so im sure it can help with many other peoples issues.
