What's the deal with military jets?

I've noticed that if you are flying an aircraft around the military base with a wanted level, they will dispatch jets to take you down.

Seems reasonable, but... they do not show up on radar, there is no audible warning about incoming missiles from said hostile fighter jets, and even after losing your wanted level they still pursue you.

What's up with that?

I was there a few hours ago. I did hear the audible warning when the missiles were fired. Later on I looked back and saw Lazer was below me, although I don't remember if it was spotted on the radar or not.

The audible warning was likely for the base's anti aircraft missiles. When the fighter jets fire upon you there is no warning, you just explode if you do not know they are there.

I've made it all of the way down to LS and gotten shot down by them.
