Made a new character

Ok so when i started GTAonline today after downloding the patch i saw that my character wasnt there anymore, i just made a new one, my characters stats and vehicle are still there, but then i read that i should not have done that, does this mean my game or savefiles can become corrupted now?

The game or save files won't become corrupt, but it will overwrite your previous character.
I'd understand doing this two days ago, but Rockstar does have a bulletin posted telling you what to do and what not to do in that situation.
