Afraid to buy apartment

So I have lost 2 characters so far and thnkfully my money stuck around. Thinking of buying a 200k apartment but if i lose my character again then I lose the money and the apartment. Thinking of just buying a cheap garage till Im sure i wont lose another. Can you still get a mechanic with a cheap aprtment or is it only for high end?
