Is it safe to create a new character yet?

I've given up on waiting for my character to come back. I'm thinking about starting a new game with a new character in slot 2.

 

Anyone who has already done this, is your new character still there or has he/she vanished too?

I think so. I'm on my third character and had this one for 3 days now. When I lost my other two characters, I'd leave the game by shutting my xbox off. Now, I go to the GTA online at the start menu, select LEAVE GTA Online and go back to story mode. Then I shut my xbox off. Haven't lost a character since.
