How to unlock better car mods

I know it says you have to "win # more races with this type of vehicle" to unlock most of the performance upgrades at LS Customs... but does anyone know exactly what constitutes a "win"? Is it only if you come in first place against at least one other player? Or can you still get a "win" for playing a race solo? Does the race need to be a certain length, or can I just spam short 1 lap races to get wins? What if you come in second place? (I know racing games often consider getting on the podium to be a 'win,' but somehow I doubt getting 2nd or 3rd place gets you any unlocks in this game)

Just looking to get some more detailed info. As with almost every side activity, the in-game explanations/instructions are a little bare-bones and leave me with many unanswered questions about how exactly this works. Kinda wish there was like, an "about" section in the pause menu where they could actually explain the mechanics of the game in more than two sentences.

Racing alone doesn't work. With 2 players however it does work and you always need to finish 1st to make it count. And for certain car parts, the races won must also be with the same type of car as the one you want to upgrade (sports, sedan etc.). Race lengths or other conditions don't matter.

2 or more people, any length, you have to come first and you need to be in the same type of car. Ie sports, super, SUV etc

Thanks guys.

Just bummed cause I really want to get better upgrades for my Schyster Fusilade, but I can never get anyone to actually join in races with me. Everybody wants to hang around freeroam chasing down bounties and holding up convenience stores until they get a text from Gerald and can get back to grinding Violent Duct. Then when I try to join other people's races, there's always some dude who has a custom car with fully maxed out stats and just smokes me so I don't even have a chance at winning.

Race solo with your class of car you own. That is how I did it. No one was wanting to race with Coupes and I have been trying to build on my Convertible Coupe so I just raced solo and unlocked a lot of my mods. Seems people only want to race with Super cars all the time.

I wanted my Cheetah wheels so I just kept racing solo to get those mods and to see some of the other tracks.

Are you on PS3 or Xbox? I know that with Xbox, racing solo does unlock mods.

Oh, really? Other people said it doesn't credit you for winning solo races, which is what I figured would be the case. If I can earn unlocks doing solo races, then I'll gladly just cruise around in my custom Schyster practicing my driving skills and powersliding through traffic. Repeating races a couple times also helps me when I pass through those areas in freeroam, too, cause I already know an efficient and clear path through the area. Makes ducking the one-time a whole lot easier.

(Yes, I'm on xbox as well)

I know that winning solo races does not count towards your win/loss ratio but it does count towards the Vehicle mods. I have proved it to myself over the weekend.

Every online race I have done with other people, non of them were done with Coupe's and that is what I own and have insured. As soon as I started Racing solo, vehicle mods started to unlock. You will not win any money but you will get mods and Rank points. The Downtown Underground is a good map since you pick up an extra 100 rank every time you go over the Stunt Jump on the track.

Are you sure? My Buffalo needed 1 more race to unlock a new engine, so I did one more solo race for its sports class, still said 'win 1 more race' Are you sure you aren't just ranking up and unlocking the mods that are unlocked by level and not wins?

I am positive. I see the difference between Rank upgrades and Win upgrades. I made note of the mods while in LS Customs that I wanted and just did races until they were unlocked. I think I did like 30 Solo races.

Just create a Solo Instance when getting into Online, go to a race locations and start it. No one will join, you can even Vote yourself into another race, or just repeat, refresh, go into another mission or go back to freemode.

I can confirm that somehow supercars count towards sports cars.

so far only raced with supercars and won a few times but these races did unlock engine upgrades for my khameleon (sports)

Perfect. I don't really care about Rank Points (you get them for doing EVERYTHING, no need to worry about farming them) and as long as I'm not hemorrhaging money from buying ammo and body armor, then not getting paid is no big deal. I just really want the mods. This will be a perfect solo activity for me to undertake while I'm smoking and can't be arsed to worry about defending myself from freeroam griefers :p

Just create a Solo Instance when getting into Online

You don't even have to do that. Just start up a race in whatever game you're in, and don't invite anyone else. Then hit "play" and it will ask you to confirm you want to start the mission solo. Then you can vote to replay that race (or vote to move to another one) at the end, and since you're the only one in the match, whatever you vote for gets picked.

You can get all unlocked parts if you have a jailbroken iPhone using iFruit, saw it on youtube

sometimes solo counts but most of the time it does. it counted like 3 for me so i raced like 20 more but the 20 did not count. just keep going to new lobbies until someone joins your race

edit... most of the time solo DOES NOT count

You know you can actually go back and just edit the post, right? No need to make a new post to correct a typo.

Are you on the PS3 or Xbox? Did the Xbox get a patch today for Tuesday patch days? Xbox was still on version 1.0 over the weekend and PS3 was on 1.02.

Hopefully it hasn't been taken out yet for me.

If you go to join random race you can usually get in a racing group that keeps doing them over and over.

I AM SORRY ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE VIDEO, BUT MY WEBCAM IS ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH.

yeah, I checked the other night. It is no longer working. Sucks, it is going to take forever to unlock some mods.

Will most likely result in just racing one friend over and over so we can just unlock what ever mods we want.

You can unlock all mods for all classes by doing it on a motorcycle. Best place is the one at the prison set to one lap - 30 second race. Hit me up if you wanna take turns on wins, Xbox 360: gamertag: Wildpredator

Solo never worked for me but somehow I've unlocked all mods for all cars. I've won about 30 sports, 30 super, 4 sedan, 4 coupe, and 4 motorcycle races and somehow all mods for all the above listed vehicle types were unlocked. I'll try to check trucks later today and see if those were unlocked also.

For me solo races didn't work.

What I did learn was that winning in a certain class of car made no difference... Once I had won 50 races overall all my upgrades for everything were unlocked! I currently have an suv, sedan, sports, bike and super all with race upgrades.
