GTAO pay to win? Maybe not

Recommended Posts

I know many of you dislike the idea of pay to win as do I, however I don't think rockstar is taking the game down that road. There are a couple of things you can buy in-game. Houses, cars planes and and other features that require high rank to unlock. I think that microtransactions satisfy both the hardcore gamer and the casual gamer. The casual gamer gets the simple stuff like a house, car, or plane. Now here is where it gets better for those of you who dislike the idea of microtransactions. Although players can buy expensive items, they can usually only buy one or maybe two items at maximum even with such a large sum of 1 mil cash, that is if they want something that stands out. For example cars like the bugati will cost you around 1 million dollars. In reality it would take someone about 7 mil to buy all the good stuff. The hardcore gamer likes the game to be fair and focused mainly around progression by simply playing the game. They don't think casual gamers should be awarded for just paying a little extra. The game does a good job of helping players distinguish between new and experienced gamers, regardless of what type of car or house they have. They do this by limiting the access to better guns until higher levels like 15 - 30, and even at level 15 the weapons aren't very good. The clothes are also limited by level. There are also special perks that come with being a higher level like hiring a chopper pilot to take down other players. But the most important point I should emphasize on is the gun restriction. I myself am level 10 and find myself limited by my gun arsenal, as many other players do as well. I think microtransactions are fine and were established in a way that allows all of the GTAO community to enjoy the game without ruining the experience.

If I buy in game cash with real cash and buy a new apartment, or car or whatever, I'm not paying to win. I second, I do not think the game is pay to win.

Being you still have to level up to get certain weapons, which you cannot buy the levels.

FrozenInferno

I will definitely be buying a high end apartment and maybe a car or two with cash cards, and I don't are what anybody else thinks about it. I still have to do races to unlock mods for my favorite cars, level up to buy decent weapons and upgrades for them so I can compete against better-armed people, and so on. Using real cash to buy things like an apartment have absolutely no effect on other players and give me no advantage.

That said if it turns out my in-game money bought with real cash gets sucked away by "bills" while I'm offline it will be the last time I buy one.

If Rockstar ever allows people to buy rep points and level up then yeah, that would be pay-to-win and completely not fair to players who don't want or can't afford cash cards.

I have this argument with several friends that most games don't have P2W unless its extreme circumstances.

The thing is yes they can buy stuff with real life money. Mainly cars and houses but it's a minimal advantage!

And even if in the end they manage to buy the same weapon as a higher rank using real life money then surely the more hardcore gamer who didn't play should be more skills with it and come out on top?

Most the time its the gamers stuck in the middle of hardcore and buying stuff who seem to moan the most :p
