i got the same a couple days ago but hardly surprising as online is completely broken for so many still.

That is a part of the Bad Sport system that should really be removed. Seeing how buggy the game is, there's no telling if the person was forced to leave because of some derp on the game's side. (And yeah, I saw this message myself recently because of Online not knowing what it was doing -- twice)
