How to NOT lose your characters

I have found how you guys/gals are losing characters. It almost happened to me.

 

When the game gives you the cloud server is down error. It gives you multiple options at the bottom on the screen.

 

Square = retry

Circle = back

X = continue without saving

 

If you press x it will tell you that you need to create a character before continuing. (Beware if you go past this screen you will lose your characters)

 

The best thing to do is keep hitting square and retry to connect.

 

If you did hit x and got the create a character prompt hit circle to leave that screen and square then to retry to connect.

 

I have emailed r* already.

 

What the game should do is save information onto the console first then periodically just like the auto save on the game send the info to the cloud.

 

It should have a prompt saying cloud updated and you should have the option of a quick update also just like quick save.

 

Anyways hope this helps people from losing characters.

I think the best thing to do is when you get any cloud errors is go directly back to single player.

 

Retry forces you into character creation and it may not be a good idea to access anything while the cloud is screwed.

Retry didn't force creation here. It simply tried to connect and gave same error.

you're absolutely right. i got my char. deleted once, and learned my lesson quick. everytime the clouy servers were down, i would go directly to solo session to run the track to work on stamina, drive on the opposite side of a highway for driving skills, and shoot cops and gangs all day before the cloud servers start working again. trust me, its worth it.

Unfortunately, an unlucky few of us lost our characters anyway

 

I had mine for 3 days. Went to bed, everything was cool...woke up, and now he's gone.

I've posted this before but I don't care

 

Its doesn't matter if you are playing the game or not your characters are not safe , here I have two different accounts on the same console and I wasn't playing any of them when they had the server issues yesterday , but read about it on the forums so decided to check social club,

 

My first character is fine and and my second on the other account got deleted yesterday so it's random, one survived and one didn't , and no I haven't made a new character on the second account I'm still waiting to see if they can recover it but I think it's highly unlikely

It's pretty simple don't believe your own safety tips.

 

I had 4 characters deleted in my slot 2 since launch

 

 

2 days ago after slot one disappearing forever I made a new char in it following these steps and bought the 205k property, the best bike and a few cars. And it all went while I was sleeping

nope i never connect unless cloud is on, i always save by moving to single player and back online, when cloud is up, didnt help, char replaced by lvl 0, i have NOT created a new char at all.

What's really wierd is my character actually got turned into a bald woman overnight lol... With headphonez on. Everything else stayed the same, so f***d up!

I had two characters on separate accounts that's one per account so you sir are wrong

My friend currently has a lv 68 character in limbo that wasn't deleted because the $ is still there, but he doesn't see it. I told him NOT to make a new one, but it has been almost a day and still no character. any more insight?

well I never hit create a new character, but since cloud came back on that is directly where I go when I click online.
