How to find out when "cloud" server is on/off?

I had no problems with gta online... just with my internet connection

 

but how do I find out when the cloud server is online or offline? "thru my computer not thru my ps3?"

 

went to log on and it said cloud servers were off line and said i could continue if I wanted but then just goes to making a new character.. is this character just for fun to roam around in while the servers are offline or will it delete my first one?

Best way I've found is monitoring the new posts at reddit, they're pretty much constantly posting and whenever there's downtime within a couple minutes of getting booted I've seen a page full of new threads over there.

I was checking BAWSAQ, thought that would give some kind of indication, but alas, BAWSAQ is up at the minute whilst Online is FUBAR...

Try to find out if there's an orange circle in the right bottom corner after some missions etc. That means your game progress is saving.
