where is my online character?

so i quit an online game mid round (i've done this many times before) however, now when i go online my character is gone and i'm prompted to start a new character? anyway, not sure what the deal is, i'm assuming like many things this is yet another bug surfacing, but i'm assuming inevitably i'll be getting my character back, right? i mean, i did waste forty plus hours, it's like it's gone right, because that would sort of defeat the purpose of having server side saves.

 

anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else is having similar issues.

Everyone is having the same issue and R* says they are trying to fix it if it is not fixed the next update I'm getting rid of gta

I should mention, this occurred not because of the cloud save issues, but after I quit in the middle of a freeroam session. I think I had been blown up for the second or third time in a row, and I just did not have the patience to sit there any more and simply powered off. I've done this previously, and had no issues, but when I attempted to get back online, I did get the "cloud unavailable message," which I quickly skipped through. The only problem is that now that the online cloud service is back up, the only character available is the one I just created moments ago, prior to the tutorial.

Mine was the same way as yours I left a game free roam solo and went back in to a empty bank no garage and a bald guy lvl 1 I was level 15

Same here. Loaded up my game this morning and things were working fine. I tried doing a mission and eventually timed out. Instead of returning me to free roam, the game took me to the character selection screen and my character was gone. R*Social shows no online progress or awards or anything.

I guess it's easy to take these things for granted, and although I knew the game would be unstable early on, I certainly didn't think that would include something so essential. The player's profile is sort of an integral part of the machinery, and not something so easily comprisable. It's the record of all the time you've spent plodding away, for better or worse, and considering that all profiles are saved server-side using R*'s cloud system, people have no other choice but to trust in that system implicitly.

 

I would hold out for the possibility that this could be fixed and profiles restored, but it seems to me that it would require each person make a personal claim, and since R* is simply responding with a collective "subscribe to this topic for updates," that possibility seems very distant to say the least. I don't know, I'm bummed. This whole thing has left such a bad taste and my mouth, it's even affected my attitude towards the part of the game I really enjoyed. Now it just reminds me of all this BS.

YOU HAVE 1500 RESPONSES TO THIS ISSUE ON THE SUPPORT SITE!! I SUBSCRIBED AND I AM GETTING AT LEAST 10 EMAILS A MINUTE BECAUSE PEOPLE KEEP POSTING FINDING THEIR CHARACTERS GONE!!! The issue is WIDESPREAD! Shut the servers down and roll to a backup that was taken before the latest cloud server splosion and fix this. If you dont have backups to roll to ... then this is just Mickey Mouse, mates.

 

this was quoted in one of my subscribed emails. insult to injury, by subscribing to the topic, my inbox has hundreds of emails now just within the last half an hour.

i purchased a $319k apartment, with a 10 car garage, modded all my vehicles and weapons was at level 24....left to story mode, saved the game, then left to dashboard, THEN powered off my xbox....

 

next day i get on to play, and ALL OF MY STUFF is gone...no apartment, no mods on my vehicles, no weapons, no money in its place....but my rank is still ther???

 

NOW i just get online to play again, and my character is at zero everything, non-exsistant..... they need to not only fix these issues, but make it right for the ones this has affected not only once but several times!!!

 

if this game was not ready to go online, THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE LAUNCHED IT!!!!

they would have lost a lot less respect if they had done it that way! R* KNEW they were going to have an extremely high volume of players, and yet they didnt beef up their servers before hand??? Come on, this is a nightmare repeat of Sim City from earlier this year with EA!

What a joke. I just checked my email as well. 900+ new messages within 30 min. AND when I try and unsub from the link, it gives an error and does nothing.

Will my character reappear?? I created a new one on slot 2 but the older one was at lvl 23 and I had a garage and lots of things. Are those things lost forever? I need answers!!

We can only hope they'll sort it out and return our lost characters. I did the same thing as you, made a new character on slot 2 after losing my character on slot 1. No matter what, don't make a new character on the same slot as the one you've lost. I think that will likely result in permanent loss with no chance of recovery. This is all speculative though. It would be nice to get official word from R* about what they're planning.

they should revert to a backup (assuming they have one of course) prior to this mess. it wouldn't be a perfect solution since it would mean that some people would basically lose the last couple hours of progress. however, since no word has been issued by R* about such a move, every hour that goes by means that it will be that much more of a hassle, thus increasing the amount of complaints. my guess is if the issue is going to be resolved, it's time sensitive, and they need to act quickly to stop the bleeding.
