I play on a Playstation 3 and every time I joined an online game there was nobody on. The reason there was no one on was because my router/modem's NAT settings were to strict. I had what is called, "NAT Type 3". NAT type 3 enables your router/modem to run over the top security to the point where it dramatically effects your gaming and internet experience in negative ways, as just about everything is blocked because it, "may" be considered, "risky".

Today I went out and bought myself a different modem that allowed me to use what is called, "NAT Type 2" which is still perfectly safe, only NAT Type 2 allows everything to run smoothly so that you can enjoy your gaming and internet experience. When I bought my new modem I hooked it up and configured it. I hopped onto GTA Online and I was always put into a session with many players.

If you have a Playstation 3 and want to figure out what, "NAT Type" you have then go to, "Network Settings", then go do an, "Internet Connection Test". Wait to see if everything turns out alright. The results should look like this, (below)

Obtain IP Address - Succeeded

Internet Connection - Succeeded

PlayStation Network - Succeeded

UPnP - (results don't really matter)

NAT Type - (Should be Type 1 or Type 2)

Connection Speed (Download)* (Depends)

Connection Speed (Upload)* (Depends)

If you can't even obtain the IP address then your NAT is so strict that it wont let your Playstation 3 even complete the first step. NAT Type 3 is bad and you want to try to change it. To learn how to change it look up on Google, "How to get NAT Type 2". Also it would be a good idea to give your Internet Service Provider a call. Sorry for all of the Xbox users I do not and have never owned an Xbox. If you have any questions for me just ask I will do my best to help as I can feel your frustration.

That has happened to me my whole life up untill now. And yes, it should help you depending on what type NAT Type you have. Try watching this video.

Thanks for this OP, the only way I could get a NAT 2 was buy enabling UPnP on my router, as DMZ I couldn't figure how to do that. I use a wifi at the moment. By*

Good post but I think that you are confused about what the differences between NAT 1, 2 & 3 are and how to change it.

Simply put:

Nat Type 1 is when your PS3 is connected directly to the modem/internet and does not require any configuration. (Not very common).

Nat Type 2 is when your PS3 is connected through a firewall(NAT) but is configured to do so.

Nat Type 3 is when your PS3 is connected through a firewall(NAT) but not configured to do so.

If your router has UPnP then you shouldn't have to configure anything at all BUT it is always best to manually assign ports for specific programs/games if you have multiple users in your household in order to avoid port conflicts.

It is best to assign a static IP to your PS3, and then forward the ports to the IP address you choose for the PS3.

To do this easily you should go to your routers homepage (usually 192.168.2.1/192.168.0.1) and print screen the internet settings for easy input into your PS3. It is then a case of going to the Network tab on the PS3 and creating a new manual connection, Follow the on screen displays and input the internet details. Follow the link for step by step instructions.

http://portforward.com/networking/staticip-ps3-playstation-3.htm

Once done you need to manually forward these specific ports, TCP 80, UDP 88, TCP & UDP (both) 3074, TCP & UDP (both) 53, UDP 3064, TCP & UDP (both) 1795, TCP & UDP (both) 1745. Follow link to find your router make and model number.

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/

When you have done this you will have configured your router correctly.

This should help you for any game you play not just GTA ( I do it for most if I have trouble) but I think that the lack of players problem is because of poor matchmaking and teething errors with the servers.

^ this is true. Lol I tried it didn't work on my end maybe it's because I'm easily confused with this whole internet thing. I only have a wifi connection at the moment. I enabled UPnP on my wifi, now I have NAT 2 is this good ? Sometimes when I turn my ps3 it's back to NAT 3 and I have to switch off wifi and re do the internet test then it's NAT 2 again. When I play online , it doesn't put me back to NAT3 does it? Can that even happen?

I am not confused, I am providing a simple example and tutorial. I don't want to go off explaining every little detail because many people don't care and they would rather just get to the point. These people need GTA Online and they need it now.

As if Jock Cranley even knows what a Playstation is.

I'm sure he thinks it's a combat trainer or something.

Ok well as long as you got it to work. And I highly do not recommend using DMZ because it puts your console out in the open, leaving it to be hacked as there is no security whatsoever.

Keep joining different sessions until you get one with other people.

Profit?

That does not work if you have strict internet settings like I had.

I know that a PlayStation 3 is a gaming console. Don't underestimate my smarts.

If someone tries all of this, and your NAT type is still at type 3, then you need to call your ISP. I had that problem and I had to order a static IP. Doesn't cost much, like 2 dollars a month.

To OP:

Nice thread but you failed to realize one thing..

Instead of going out and actually buying a brand new modem (waste of money) You can actually switch your NAT types through your internet browser on your computer...

Haha, no actually my modem was provided for me by my internet service provider and it was the most basic router you could get, in fact, I called them multiple times asking for assistance but they said that there was nothing they could do because my modem didn't have the option to change my NAT Type. So the only other choice was to go buy another modem. And being able to change your NAT Type through your internet browser is not possible. I think you are talking about using your internet browser to log onto your modem's control panel and then change your NAT Type from there. Good point though.
