How do we know if the cloud is "up"?

The reason I ask is because if it is currently up, then my character is gone for good, correct?

 

Everyone says it'll come back with the cloud, but people on my friends list are playing and they must have the cloud in order to play correct?

 

Therefore the cloud is connected, it just doesn't contain our (my) characters anymore.

 

Flawed logic?

I want to know this, too. How can we tell if the cloud is up (GTAO is being saved) or not?

 

It will give me the message "cloud is offline; progress won't be saved until it's back online" but then I won't get a notification that it's back online.

Yesterday I witnessed first hand a "Cloud Down" incident.

 

We were playing and after a survival, we decided to sell our daily vehicles. I got mine first, sold, when I gone out (usually I think it saves right after you sell), it popped a message right above my minimap, saying "Save unsuccessful, Rockstar service unavailable" or something and that message stood there. That was about time we started seeing friend lists endlessly loading and/or friends couldn`t join / stuck in clouds / game invites never going out.

 

We drove around, got Simeon car pop-up, took a bit to find the car, drove to Simeon, still unavailable, then a few minutes later it did save, at which point the message dissapeared.

 

Being the paranoiac that I am, I forced a save by running a fast race and kept the console running while I checked on Social Club - all was there.

Key to me was to sit tight ingame and wait for it to save.

Don't count on getting it back, I lost my guys a couple days ago and no luck yet. So I created a new guy in slot two, waiting to see if my slot 1 guy comes back.
