This whole jobs thing confuses me - someone explain?

So I've been playing some missions, but I think I'm doing it wrong.

Every now and then, Gerald or Simeon sends me a message on my phone and I'll accept the invite for the job. This automatically makes me host the game. How do I join a particular mission that someone else is hosting? Without sitting around waiting for someone who just happens to send me an invite for that mission.

Also, these invites seem to come and go (the ones from Simeon and Gerald). I'll have one in the job list on my phone, save it for a little bit and when I try to play it, the job is gone. I played a few of them with a friend yesterday, he was the host and kept inviting me, and today I'm getting invites for the same missions.

You have to bring up your phone, and choose the little icon to the left of the one that you usually accept missions from. On that icon, there are options to join deathmatches, races, missions, etc.

You mean quick jobs? All I can do from there is random missions/races/death matches I think.

"Jobs" is a clever word used to describe "A variety of generic online game modes"

So there's no specific order in which to play them? Are they random in the order in which they appear on your phone?

And what about them disappearing on my phone? My friend says this doesn't happen with him, but most of the time when I look at jobs on my phone there are none available.

They are random on your phone, also you might get some repeats.

However, when you level up, more sh*t unlocks and better missions unlock too.

From what I've gathered so far, the jobs only disappear from your phone if you change servers. Mine appear to stay otherwise, and even if you lose it you should receive the same one again.. just a matter of time.

Weird system if you ask me.

Don't know what these better jobs are going to be, but so far all I've gotten is "repo this vehicle", or "go steal this drugs". A combination of both once, when I had to steal a meth lab RV (where have we seen that before?).

So to get this straight, there is no way to do a particular missions of your choosing?

The jobs on your phone are invites from other players to join their games. If you dont accept it the game will be played without you hence why when you decide to do it 15 minutes later it is over.

If you want to do your own jobs you have to go to contacts and call Gerald or Simeon. These jobs are boring and repetetive anyways.

Join a deathmatch or a race, When the race is over you will be given a screen where you vote on the next race, deathmatch or mission. Thursday I used this method and ended up sticking with a bunch of guys for a couple of hours doing lots of races, missions and deathmatchs and by the time I quit out I was level 16 with enough money to buy a garage. Seems to me that everyone is focusing on freeroam when the whole fun of gta online is doing races etc. As you level up you meet more characters who offer more jobs and features.

Actually the invites from other players appear alongside those from Simeon and Gerald. Like you said I think death matches and races are probably more fun. stealing cars and drugs is all I've gotten from the "missions" yet, so you get more fun ones later on? I do think it's lots of fun to team up against a bunch of NPCs with a friend.

When you hit 15 or 16 you get survival mode which are waves of npcs that attack your team and get progressively harder. I just advise you to ignore your phone and hit start on your controller. Go to online and hit jobs. Join a job or host a job and select which mode you want. Races and deathmatches are self explanatory but 'Missions' pit teams of players against each other. My favourite one so far has been 'top gun' where one team on dirt bikes has to escape the other team who are in jets. But there are others like the crooked cop which is basically a capture the flag game. It is quite a confusing system but once you understand it gets a lot more fun.
