Does the stuff you purchase from stores actually do anything?

I know if you get a soda or something for a vending machine it will refill your health, but when I purchased a candy bar from Apu at one of the Kwik-E-Marts, it didn't seem to do anything (despite being much more expensive than that soda).

 

I was just curious if it was supposed to actually do something.

Yeah, hold the button to eat it and it gradually fills health, very useful in deathmatches, jobs and pretty much everything

Snacks you buy from stores can be used out in the field to replenish health by going to your inventory (cigarettes make you lose health though). I was in the middle of a fire fight and was nearly dead, but I took cover and munched on my snacks and it restored my health.

 

But it can be hit and miss since there are some snacks you can't eat while driving (mostly drinks in my experience).

Not really, lol. I got the jist of interaction menu, but I didn't know there was an actual inventory which held sodas and stuff. I thought it was just some quick way to change clothes or something.
