Seriously, everyone can start a mission if they try enough times.
Think about it, it's afternoon on the first saturday since online release. Servers aren't "down", it's just that all the kids who got their parents to buy the game for them are not in school and it's not quite their bed time yet.
Servers are just overloaded I'm sure.

I feel bad for you guys who haven't/still cant connect to GTA:O. I've been able to get on since 7AM October 1st.

I haven't been able to log in at all today.... and I think I lost my character again because it's not showing up on the character wheel, just a blank image.

My character never shows up in single player so don't worry.

I can't see my guy on the character wheel either, but if you go to the PAUSE menu, ONLINE, and Choose Character, he was still there.

 

Might be a way for you to check if your guy is there?
