About Slipstreaming / Catchup

Yesterday I played a 1 v 1 motocross race and lost.

Except for the guy fell off his bike and I passed him right up after just starting the last lap......

So at the end of the race he somehow manages to catch me, even though I hit the turns right and everything (I do this sh*t in real life) and blows right by me and past the finish line.

We both had the same dirt bike.

WTF

Did the motherf*cker slip stream me on a f*cking dirt bike?

How did he catch me if he fell off of his god damn bike? Does this "catch up" sh*t actually make you go faster to catch people?

What catch-up does is, if you go too far off track or are thrown from your bike, you hold the Y/Triangle button (I think) and after ~2 seconds it'll return you - good as new - to the last check-point you hit.

As for slipstream... I don't know if bikes give one or not, unfortunately. The only two times I was on a bike in a race, I won both times and managed to stay in front for the majority of the races. :/

No that is not what catch up is. Catch up mode provides either an artificial boost to the player/players coming last or it slows down the speed of the leader. It hasn't been officially confirmed but the general consensus it is one of the two.

Basically, you are at a huge disadvantage when your in the lead in a race.

Why Rockstar added such a huge crutch like this I have no idea.

I disable catch up whenever I play any race.

Only the host can do it though. Truthfully, this game kind of sucks. I might sell it.

Catch up = Rubberbanding (or Dynamic game difficulty balancing) which is a way the game can keep the people who trial behind involved in the race.

Think of Mario Kart the person in last place always gets a speedboost/blueshell and the person in front always gets bananas from boxes. This is the same the person in last place gets a speed boost and you don't.

I have to admit I kinda like these features. Never before in a racing game have I had such close and intense races. If someone blows past you then you can usually slipstream them and blow past them then it turns into a battle for first. Instead in most games the pack spreads out and it feels like you are racing against nobody.

You know, not going to lie, but i am thinking kinda the same. Been trough the single player game twice, so i got my monies worth i think, but Online is a gltchy, auto aiming, 1 shot killing shotgun running, rubber banding catch up money sinking noob fest.

This, I got into an argument with one of my friends the other day because when he wanted to join my session he had to change to free-aim. This game holds so many peoples hands it's laughable.

Honestly I still have had a bunch of races where I've led the whole race and won. And catch up was on I could tell my car was bogged down and the rpms wouldn't rise. So idk man I never have this sh*t where I lead and everybody "blows past" me to steal the win. Maybe they'll catch up and make the race more interesting... Then it's more fun trying to block them or get them out of your draft.

I will agree that the slipstreaming is a bit too powerful though. You get CRAZY speed super fast from it and the sound effect is like your in a jet lol.

The game holds no one hands on it's own, you make it hold your hand by the options you choose. Using your brain is not something many people here do, but try it sometime.

Catchup punishes you for good driving, it is as easy as that. There is no other way to put it, you do well and race a good line, they slow you down. I hate racing against it. I make a mistake, I deserve to lose if the other guy didn't I just don't understand people's mentality where screwing up and still winning when the other guy races flawlessly is ok. I wish there was a lobby you could join where that crap was disabled, 9/10 people use catchup and if you ask me it ruins races. I don't need the tards who cannot weave through traffic or take a corner safely up racing with me simply because I am forcefully slowed down by the game.

End Rant.

i was in first one time and all of a sudden my car wouldn't go as fast as it did trying to get into first. so im pretty sure catch up does make the leaders car slower.

If I did that, I'd hardly ever get to race. At least 4/5 times I see people using it. I hate it, but I live with it. I can't believe it's on by default, though. I bet if it were off by default, you'd see a lot less races using it.

Catchup is the slipstreaming.

The respawn works weither it is turned on or off.

It does feel a little overpowered. I have a much more fun race when it's disabled, but if enabled I'll give it a try anyway.

You'll be glad to know they still have this dumb feature in the game for all those "special" people out there....

I mean seriously.... this game is designed for Adults to play, were not Children (even though we clearly rant like them at times, lol),.... Its not fair when your racing against an Idiot who either cant Drive/Sail/Fly in a straight line for 4 seconds without hitting a stationary object... and then have them come whizzing past you into first place at the finish line, because of the stupid catch up feature......

The game shouldn't be treating us like children and enforcing the sprit of goodwill and fair play on us..... End of the day if your rubbish at something, you practice more until your better at it.... that's how real life works...

I come last in a majority of races either through lack of skill with certain vehicles (which is most common lol)... or from some "Special" people ramming me off the road etc. or me being unwilling to ram into someone else to gain the advantage... forcing me to fall behind, yet when this happens... I don't use catch up or magically appear right up the other persons tail pipe....

It would seem that Catch Up is designed for those players that are so unskilled its a wonder there were able to turn on the console on the first place.....

I was recently on a Flight race and noted that the only other player in the race died 3 times due to their apparent love of bridges.. and yet magically they won..... because the game felt sorry for them crashing so often it put them right on my tail.... where they then forced me down by landing their plane on top of mine...

I feel catch up is a stupid feature in the game, as it not all about racing, so if your no good at it, try a different activity.... what's going to be next.... Invincibility for those idiots that keep loosing in a death match...?!?

OP - you do get slipstream (as such) on bikes.. Trust me, I regularly slipstream on my bicycle on my daily commute, saves a lot of effort if you get it right..

More likely, you fell victim to catch-up.. which is a complete nonsense and works by limiting the top speed of your car.. (try it with mods on and supercars, you'll literally hear your revs dropping..)

Had similar myself, was a good 50% of the course distance ahead on one of the stupid jumps tracks and yet I get taken out at the alst jump by someone that was a good minute behind previously..

loads of skill, eh?

And catchup is NOT slipstreaming people - it's teh laws of areodynamics, reducing air resistance, not limiting your engine as is the manner of catchup...

I actually don't mind slipstreaming tbh as it is actually a feature of real-life racing, and also it's something that can be countered and requires a touch of skill to pull off properly.. and you've got to get into position to slipstream in the first place..

catch-up is literally like putting stabilisers on everyone's cars and telling them they're all going to win the race because they're special...

I have noticed there is an inconsistent way around catch-up. If you release the accelerator and drop a gear, then re-accelerate, the car does seem to go faster than if you were to hold down the accelerator and scream all your hatred at the current system. Yes, I know you probably think I have confused slowing down and going back to previous speed as a boost, but I have used this method many times on races like 'Long Haul' and it doesn't fail me often.

Thanks for this post, yesterday I was in a full lobby with a guy who was hosting one of those long haul rip off races. He turned off slipstream but left catch up on. We all did the race twice and he pulled away both times finishing 13 seconds ahead me who finished in second. I knew something was fishy when I check the leaderboard and his distance time waswas increasing from me while the other players were getting closer and closer to me.

JAMESON312 is gonna love you...

but on a more serious note catchup is gonna happen in about 80% of random races you join because its set as ON by default and alot of hosts dont change it...

if you wana more realistic racing experience (no catchup) then your probably better joining a racing crew that specialise in fair and competitive racing... its a whole lot more fun...
