The severity of the problems we are most likely facing for GTA Online is massive, and part of this is caused by the fact that rockstar decided to use a cloud based server to store all of their multiplayer information on.

Think about all of the issues being cashed right now by "the cloud" alone, apparently they are most likely so complex to fix rockstar hasn't even managed to make a noticible dent in fixing the problem. With gta online, there is a mass of information needing to be stored now that each individual player has the ability to customize their clothes, cars, own houses, build reputation, and create gangs. Multiply all of these factors by how many people want to play gta online and clearly there's a huge issue with relying on a "cloud" (it's just a f*cking server so lets just call it that) because it has created a new problem where there wasn't one before in any multiplayer game on console. And if its any indication by what rockstar hasn't done in the past 2 weeks and 3 days, it's an extremely hard one to get past, and not to be a pessimist, but it might be weeks before its fixed. I was more optimistic before, but still not being able to get past the first race is proving my original thoughts completely wrong.

It is probably a cluster of servers connecting to one or more replicating DB's. It appears they are having trouble ensuring all the servers have access to the most up to date character information.

It is quite a complex problem. I'm pretty sure R* had no intention or desire for it to turn out this way & I suspect they are running around like crazy pulling all nighters & crapping themselves.

I was a software developer for 15 years, I have been there. :(

It doesn't really bother me too much at how long it takes to be honest, I bought GTA V and GTA Online was free so there's no rush.

Well you at least seem to get the complexity of what rockstar has inconsiquintially caused themselves. Why couldn't we have just stored our character info on our hard drives? Why did they even need to introduce this cloud that doesn't work in the first place? Seems like an unnecessary problem, and that's what's the most frustrating about all of this.

Have you deleted your original GTA:O character? The profiles that were made while the cloud was all wonky are corrupted and need to be deleted before you can progress. I think that it's safe to say that most of us have been able to play the game for a while now. There has been some progress and I can see that in the game itself by how smooth things have been running for me at least. As for you concerns about the fact that most games are now going to be on cloud servers is justified. But you do have to realize that this is new technology being used, and that in order to take two steps forward, you might have to take one backward. In this case, the developers just have to figure out the querks that appear in the system and work them out. Just a year ago when the new Ghost Recon launched with the BRAND NEW cloud server, things went totally awry. It worse than this, believe me. It was pandomonium lol.

The thing about the cloud is that when most people start up multiplayer, and see their character is gone, they get angry and make a new one, not realising it's because of a connection issue with the cloud, and that their character still exists. Then when it does connect, it overwrites their old character.

Having the character stored on the system itself, and only updating the information on the cloud would have been so much better.

36 hours ago I couldn't play any missions.

12 hours ago it worked flawlessly.

If that's not a dent, I don't know what is.

I'm guessing by these threads that since the US has woken up it's become overloaded again?

Cloud storage of characters isn't a big deal, the losses lately have just been from extreme overloading.

or a simple fix would be an alert saying it's offline, rather than letting you make a temporary character.

That was one moany/bitching thing I did have, and that's that when things go wrong the game can be fairly bad at telling you what's happening or giving you options like 'Cancel'. None of this matters when it's running at full speed (as I discovered 12hrs ago) but if a server is overloaded or down it needs to tell us.

Seriously...they are making huge progress. You just happen to be one of the ones that still is suffering. I haven't had any problems at all getting online or having my characters save. And the fact that they went with using servers was and still is a Godsend. I couldn't be happier with the decision. .Can you imagine what kind of crap we would have to deal with if data was saved on the console side. Can you say modded saves?

I agree, it definitely attempts a 'seamless' experience which, when things are borked doesn't inform the user of the true problem.

Honestly, being able to create a temporary character is not really a good feature because the chance of overwriting previous save is high.

Also, saving on your own system would also be a bad idea. It won't be long before someone figures out how to edit the save.

I don't even think Rockstar is the one managing the cloud servers. It is probably outsourced.

RetardOfTheYear

There is some hilarious humor about cloud servers in the game radio though, that's at least something right they've got with their cloud :)

More seriously, they have made some progress, it's getting there, slowly but it does, currently we are on a peak so don'(t bother try to play unless you have optical fiber access I guess. maybe in 2 hours.

SilencedScream

Cloud gaming is the main issue with the game. They should've tested it further or, better yet, gone with something that's tried and true.

Hell - make it a player-side save. It'd keep people's characters from disappearing, their apartments from disappearing, and their vehicles from disappearing.

Black Rabbit

For those who can play, you have to admit, once they get this running smooth for all, this game is the tits.
