Same problem. Lost two characters and all the money in the bank account.

The first (slot #1) disappeared yesterday while the second (slot #2) this afternoon.

my money is back in my bank account that was gone earlier, but my character is still gone. Hopefully it all comes back soon

Im pretty sure I can confirm if you don't put a new character over the slot, it will come back. I "lost" my character morning after launch, my first time being able to play, but it was right before work. When I got back my character was back and my progress was set back like ten minutes. I had to rechoose my car, bring it to the car shop, then it the previous mission that it froze on worked.

 

Also, yesterday worked perfect for me, I played for a few hours after work. When I quit, I tired to reload my guy as a test. When my guy loaded, I was asked if I want to change his appearance, and that I would only be able to do this once. I took the opportunity to increase his sports and stuff for better initial stats and tried to keep the way he looked the same. Then it spawned me on the right side of the map, by the hills and ocean cliffs. It took forever to walk back and I believe my money dropped to $10k, and I lost another ten minutes or so of progress (i received a call after this that i had already received before quitting).

 

This is on xbox 360. Anybody else get a one time chance to change appearance??

Your character does appear to stay once the cloud returns. I've been playing with the same character since a few hours after launch.
