Slipstreaming: Punishing Skilled Players

I had an absolute killer of a race just before. It was a motocross race and I got quite lucky because between the first few checkpoints EVERYBODY messed up big time and I just happened to fly through perfectly. I was soooo far in front it was ridiculous (I'm talking at very least 3 checkpoints, and it wasn't a long race either), and even with such a massive lead I didn't put a foot wrong. All of a sudden 3 players come flying past me at ungodly speeds (think cycle stage of the Triathlon 3 in single player mode). Seriously the amount of ground they made up was laughable, blowing my near flawless race out of the water and finishing me in 4th place out of 6.

Same here pal, it is pretty funny. At 1st I thought people where cheating. but, it seems the game has a built in cheat for bad players.

Wish there was an easy way to disable it prior to searching for games.

lol @ everyone citing "reality". maybe you haven't noticed but this is an arcade game. big props to the guy mentinoing F1-KERS technology(are we playing the same game!?!)

slipstreaming is good, artifical catch-up isn't. yeah host can disable it, but they usually don't. why? because it only hurts to the player in the lead, everyone else can play demo-derbie and still stay competetive.

this just says a lot about rockstar's design choices with this game. autoaim..catch-up...passive mode(that doesn't even work)...purchasable money...

I HATE R* approach to bad players since GTA 4 online.

Let them suffer.. If they f*ckin suck they f*ckin suck. They should have to deal with it.. Not punish the people who actually do play well.

From auto aim to this new catch up bullsh*t in races,, It makes no sense.

Turn your auto aim off in single player you scrub.

It has been confirmed by a lot of people here that turning off assisted aim in SP only joins you with free aim players. If you weren't such a baddie in SP you wouldn't have to experience that.

Ever since red dead i play with aim assist on during free roam just because it upsets people like you. It's a game, get over it.

Last race I was in, I blew by everyone and had a huge lead just to have someone in the same car blow past on the last section of the race to loose. An I mean really blow past me like they had nitro. Its pretty lame.

Er, catch-up in races?

God, I hope that was a joke.

Host a race and turn Catch Up off, it should tone down the slip-stream effect to a reasonable amount

Once you get past all the bugs, GTA Online is great... but one thing REALLY pisses me off. Why in the hell have they included slipstreaming? I'm sorry, but it's an absolutely terrible idea. It punishes the players who actually have the skill to get out in front by bringing everyone up to their level; it's really luck as to who wins the race. You can be out in front by a factor of 10 seconds, only to have everyone behind you get a mega unnatural speed boost and then you lose the race. You'll be out in front driving better than someone, then they'll speed right past you into the finish thanks to slipstreaming.

Look, I understand "catchup". Bringing someone who's fallen way behind back into the race isn't such a bad thing. But what they've done with slipstreaming is make first place the worst possible place to be in until the very end. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you're in first mid way through the race, the game will boost at least one player right past you. Where's the fun in that? All you have to do to win is stay in third place until you're about 10 seconds away from the end, then use the two players in front to slip stream ahead with incredible velocity.

Rockstar, this is bullsh*t. Remove slip streaming, and adjust catchup so it just brings the player in last back up to speed with the rest of the pack. And while you're at it, add a "ghost collisions" mode. It's not fun to be racing at your best, only for someone to deliberately crash into you and ruin your chances of success. :sui:

Welcome to the real world. Slipstreaming is real, and it really works, especially once you get up over 100mph. And also, if they are 10sec behind, the slipstream isn't on. They literally have to be within a few hundred feet of you to slipstream.

Also, rubbing is racing. Deal with it.

I've won at least 25 races out of 30, which R* displays as 25/5. I won them, all with other peeps trying to slipstream me, and wreck me. You just have to know how to play the game.

Keep practicing, and you'll get better. Its not the slipstream, or the damage, its you.

Sorry to break it to ya.

Yeah. Because slipstreaming isn't a thing in reality, so it's clearly a bullsh*t feature.

Oh, here we go again with the "realism" argument.

Hey moron, guess what. Slipstreaming was implemented as a way to level out the good from the bad, so a level 50 doesn't demolish a level 5 every single time. You should probably spend 12 seconds googling it first before created a useless thread.

Only random people on internet forums that I could not give 2 sh*ts about. I mean, only them.

So basically im a douche because im against cheating options for mindless players who just want to be great with no effort. Everyone wants to be awesome in this new generation of ME ME ME.

Ok, id rather be a douche then what ever the f*ck the other options.

Actually I was in 1st for the majority of the race. 1st corner they all wiped and I got a HUGE lead which lasted for a lap and a half. If I wipe I don't expect to catch up or pass people unless they wipe too. I never wiped.

Your point is pretty pointless.

I don't think you guys really understand how slip streaming works in real life. Slip streaming is a real thing, but you cannot use it to double the max speed of a super car, you just can't. You should try playing the game before commenting on how "realistic" it is.

I've also won most of my races, but it's irrelevant, it makes no difference to the argument at hand. If you're in first at any point during the race (except the very end), people will pass you by no fault of your own. It doesn't matter if you swerve to try and avoid slip streaming, they will still boost right past you. Stop being apologists for a blatantly unbalanced feature within the game, it needs rebalancing or removing outright.

Not trolling, but wouldn't a skilled player learn to use this feature to their own advantage? If you're as good at racing as you say you are, learn to stay in second or third place, close to 1st and launch off at the end.

That's exactly what I've been doing. I get out in front at the beginning, allowing me to avoid the inevitable crashing at the start of the race. After that, I let one or two people get past me. Once that's been done, I stay on them until the very end, and once the coast is clear, slip stream past them to the finish. There's nothing skill based about that. All you're doing is gaming the system.

all games seem to give advantage to the worse players tho, looks at fifa with all the scripting and other nonsence.

slipstreaming is a decent idea, but it shouldnt make such a huge difference.

Oh God, lets not even start about FIFA.

I think OP was going on about ghost bumping. Nah, I seen enough nascar races to know bumping is real. Ask Jeff Gordon

Yeah. Because slipstreaming isn't a thing in reality, so it's clearly a bullsh*t feature.

Oh, here we go again with the "realism" argument.

How about the fact that slipstreaming has been a major component of just about every racing game ever made, at least as far back as Top Gear. It is in the game because people expect some level of realism in the game and have when it comes to driving for the better part of 2 decades. It is no different than us expecting quality shooting like shooters, or other quality implementations of things taken from other games and planted in a giant open world sand box.

Slip Streaming is not what the issue is anyway, it is Catch Up, which essentially limits the speed of the car in first place, so other racers can catch up. Which is an option you can turn off! or you can leave races with it on!. If you don't like the Catch up feature do not use it...you have that power. Then when you make friends online perhaps they will be ones who also like to play without it.

It has little do with realism anymore, it is an expected function of driving in video games, that happens to be in games because it is a pretty big part of driving real cars. Did you know that slip streaming also occurs when running or biking, or swimming or walking. It is so common in our day to day lives it often goes unnoticed. Heck even the Sand People used drafting, Obiwan thought it was to hide their numbers, in reality it was so their large animals could make the trek expending minimal effort to resistance thus requiring less stoppage time making their nomadic lifestyle much more sustainable under the blistering suns of the Tatooine.

Slip streaming is a great skill to master, and usable in many situations in the game and outside of the game, just ask Canadian Geese how much they appreciate aerodynamics.

Although many people are more likely to have heard its other common name...Drafting.

There's more than slipstreaming making significant speed boosts. I was in a motorcycle race on a very linear track. Go down a long ways turn around, go back down a long ways. Pretty much 2 straight lines. At one point I was in 2nd place and this dude goes by me at a ridiculously higher speed. We were going in a straight line so my personally skill wouldn't have made THAT much of a difference. I try to look behind me a lot and he wasn't directly behind me he was to the left of me for most of the time.

I understand the catch up feature, but third place getting catch up speed? It should be reserved for someone who's In last place by a sh*t ton. Or if there are like 2-3 stragglers that are really far behind. Not a contender who is at most 5 seconds behind first place.

Link to comment

More realism does not mean more fun. There should not be slipstreaming in a multi-player race. It does not reward skill. If you were rammed by another car in real life, then you would get knocked out. Do you want that in the game too? In real life, you can't move your car when you are in mid air and you can't magically flip your car over if you are upside down. Should we remove these things from the game to make it more realistic?

it needs a revamp. it needs to be held for a few secs before you get a boost. you should have to be really close staying right behind in a good angle for 3 secs as i said before.

no unatural speed boost stuff. I always see the winner of the race but the fastest lap is always the lower guys. they get that huge speed boost after sucking for 1 lap then tear it up after they get hang of it and with super speed boost its dumb. if you chase world records its best to just sacrifice the win and start out letting them lap you then take off and smash some records.

I actually let people close behind me now pass me if i know im coming close to finish i try to time it to let them go by first then slipstream past at the last sec. it never pays to be first in a close race at the end.

punishing skilled drivers? seriously??? the only thing punishing skilled drivers is the overly-aggressive assholes slamming you into walls and ramming you into oblivion. i can't tell you how many races have been tossed out the window just because some dickweed decided to wreck everyone they could.
