Yes, but when you lose connection/exit online mode and return back you will lose your character.

LOL I was going to ask the same question. I spent about seven minutes on that laggy character creator thing and then lost it all. I think I'll give it another week or until I hear the all clear before trying again.

Just turned my 360 and loaded up GTA to be greeted by that wonderful message. 'The Rockstar cloud serves are unavailable right now. Please try again later'.

My character saved yesterday even though I couldn't connect. It's actually been working since 7:00 am ET for me. It's so laggy and there is a lot of down time, loading for this and that. I didn't think I'd have this much fun with GTAO but it's cool. The missions seem more difficult. Just trying to steal a van or bust up a drug deal, you deal with at least 10-15 NPCs. I'd advise joining a party before doing some of the missions cause I was getting mowed down by myself.

Worked for me a few hours ago, I got passed the first racing mission and a store robbery after that. Ran around for a while and ranked up to reputation 6. Just logged in again and both characters I made are gone. I didn't get the warning that the cloud servers are down like I have before so I thought I wouldn't lose my characters but they are gone. Will make a new one and see if the same thing happens.

 

If you don't want to waste time I would suggest to wait at least till the weekend before playing, that is if they resolve this problem by then. I will continue to waste my time, cause its still fun and I am getting a better hang of the character creation.
