Character keeps getting deleted

I'm making a character, watch the intro, go to the checkpoint for the first race, it loads forever saying "Waiting for other players", I get sick of waiting and quit the game, when I come back to try again my character is gone, wtf

what am I supposed to do? I doubt there are no players to do the first race with.. lol

You dont even need anyone to play against, you just play against an AI Lamar as far as I can tell. I can't really suggest anything other than to make a character you like and note down what options you selected so you can make it again which is what I've done now that my character was deleted after several hours of play.
