How do you race against Lamar only?

I've dealt with the "launching session", I've dealt with the missing trigger, and finally for the first time I got "waiting for other players" which it's been stuck at for about half an hour.

I know many people got past the race by playing against Lamar, but there's no option to start the tutorial as a solo game. Also, some people are warning against racing with other players, but some people are saying that you need to be connected to multiplayer to start the race.

Does anyone have any legit specific instructions to get past the damn tutorial at least? I'm not bitching about the servers or anything, just the glitchy first race.

I sat there a long time.... Don't think it was a half hour.... eventually it just started though and I just raced Lamar.

What I did was (if your playing on Xbox 360) is get to the "waiting for other players" screen, turn off your console, turn it on, repeat this 3 times and then unplug and replug your ethernet cord in and then try it again. I had to do this a couple times and it worked.

Someone said specifically NOT to turn off the console or quit the game during that screen.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Will it time out eventually?
