Do they only buy enough servers to serve 50% of units sold?

Or is it even less. Seems to be a standard to never have enough server power for EVERY game unit you sold to be online all at once. Companies dont care about early online failure, and wait till traffic load gets to the 50% threshold or lower, then servers can handle load. Even the best most trusted companies feel its ok to pull this crap, weather the hate storm, then carry on. As opposed to renting the server power for 90% of your units sold to be able to join online day 1 and week 1, then stop renting the overflow servers when online traffic balanced out. Any industry insiders know how this really works? I just tried to get the online patch at 1:30 Pm ET on my PS3 and it hardlocked right after hitting OK button. Had to yank power cord to get it to respond. nevermind getting into online and seeing hookups, the update servers are puking themselves with the overload.

This game doesn't have dedicated servers. So I'm not sure what servers you are refering to?

If you think that they would lease enough server capacity to house 100% of the people that purchased the game 100% of the time then you require a lesson in logistics.

Please bare in mind that Online Games are a quite specialised area. EVE Online has been out for 10 years and CCP are still trying to optimize the Tranquility server. This isn't exactly R*s forte and they put their hands in the air last week and admitted it would be a rough launch. Although it is a bit rougher than I thought it would be.
