Have the update a week before, then have a download the day of for the online part. I think this would have avoided this mess. I think everything will pan out in the next few days. But now I don't even want to turn on the game for I forsee errors. The download (on ps3 anyway) was 36mb and it wasn't on rockstar's servers. Having the update sooner would not fix the connection issues. The issues are the same as every other online game, too many people trying to connect at once.
