Teenage boys are the unspoken target audience? Say what?

MorganFreeman-bobbing.gif

That's tantamount to saying "All games are for kids". It's funny how 'Fifty shades of grey' is one of the most successful books of recent times, read mainly by women & is also incredibly misogynistic. f*cking bunch of hypocrites.

It's a very cliched article, but you've got to imagine what a game such as this looks like to a parent. My mum came in a few days ago whilst I was playing GTA V and was completely shocked as to why I was walking around beating people to death with a baseball bat. Labeling teenage boys as the 'unspoken audience' is pretty close to accurate. I'm not saying that Rockstar intend to sell copies in those age ranges, but it doesn't change the fact that most 13-16 year olds who own a console will be playing (or wanting to at the very least) GTA V.

The writer has a point. Just look at people these days, they're highly influenceable. People are still sagging their pants, people wear whatever the hell their nextdoor neighboors wear, 50% of us used to be emo's just because we've seen other people be emo's and we all cried because we got scammed in Runescape.

Not to mention GTA V is more graphic than the previous GTA games. But still we can't blame GTA for all this, since it's just a reflection of the real world, but games do have an effect on us, stop denying it.

cant really deny the games targeted toward teenagers, If i was to guess they would be the majority, but again this sh*t is so old, parents should already know what GTA is this isnt the first game.

also the "Fifty shades of grey" comment is great, i completely agree, and what Simon Hale said on the comments below the article

I've played GTA since the beginning, though I was 17 at the time so I probably had most of my mental development done by then. I commit crimes all the time, but that has nothing to do with GTA, it is because my favourite drug is outlawed. I haven't raped anyone yet, but surely that is just a matter of opportunity.

There are many references to rape in the game, whether they are implied (as with Floyd) or threatened (as with Johnny K), and then there's jimmy talking about rape while playing online.

However, the side mission with the two guys is DEFINITELY NOT rape, and I do not know of any opportunity to either witness a rape or initiate one.

We should not be surprised that there is outrage amongst the ignorant masses. We should be glad of it, it only increases the sales of the title and makes it more likely we will get more fun and "extreme" content in future. It also opens up the ever-important issue of free speech.

In general, it seems women especially tend to get up in arms about this stuff, partly because of the toxic influence of feminism (which has actually made women less happy over the years), and partly because women value freedom less than security. The men who get involved in the argument are usually politicians looking for votes, lawyers looking for a lawsuit, or fools who think agreeing with a women will get them laid (hint: it won't).

Writing a big rebuttal in response to articles like this is pointless (lol at the guy who has attempted that). These people do not think logically or consider any analysis other than the kneejerk one they are given by lazy journalists.

The dude is a clown and didn't even play the game, he just did "loads of research" on it.

He's just trying to point a finger and throw the blame on kids being stupid in modern US on bad parenting instead of the schools, because he's a R and would rather blame something than give public schools any money.

Or... they could act like real parents and teach their children that there are bad things in the world like these and they shouldn't perform them and stay away of them, so they are ok in a TV screen but not in real life because there are consequences and they can harm people really bad? :dozing:

So sick of this BS talk.

People should not listen to these Crappy Articles, I've been playing GTA since GTA 3's release, and I'm 17yrs old, and thanks to god I'm completely fine... I don't do drugs, smoke, crimes, etc... It's just a game, and the mom from the article must Allow her son to play the game since all of her son's friends got the game... IT'S JUST A GAME!

EDIT:

No, wait. I should be more harsh about this. It's complete bullsh*t.

The reality proves, that games such as GTA almost never have any impact on young people.

However, I don't think it's OK for a 7 or 10 years old child to play GTA but come on, 13...

Should "kids" be playing this game? probably not, but what do people consider a kid? Are some 13-14 year olds mature enough to play a gta game? yes, It should really be up to parents to decide if their child is mature enough to handle games like this. My mother bought me GTA 3 when i was 13 because she knew i was mature enough to know the difference between reality and fantasy. But there are some that are not smart and mature enough to play games like this just how some young teens should never have watched jackass because they wanted to ride a shopping cart into a brick wall. Obviously 8-11 or 12 year olds should not be playing a Mature rated game

I did research on this a couple of years back and from the countless hours of reading studies, articles, and meta-analysis, the conclusion was that violent video games do not produce violent children. The main two factors were gender and the context and not the amount of violence involved. If the context of the violence include either justification (e.g., killing a murderer/bad guy/self-defense) or repercussions (getting arressted/killed), then for the most part, it will not cause actual violence or aggression in the child. As for gender, it has been shown that boys are more susceptible to increased aggression, if there is any, (and it's usually temporary e.g., a few minutes after playing the game), and for girls it actually increases their sense of antiviolence and trying to avoid it as much as possible. I think it's ashame that parents don't feel capable enough to rear their children properly and to make sure they understand what their foundational morals and values should be, instead of constantly bitching to the world that everyone else is making their children do the things that they do.

Well I agree with her but not really...

I think our society is being hurt by the amount of 15 and under kids playing mature games like GTA V without the slightest bit of parental guidance to educate them on the mature content they are exposed too.

However, Im sure that this lady isnt going to bitch about the 15 shades of grey movie that Im sure alot of young kids will watch out of curiosity.

Umm Deff you do realize that the article was written by a man, so your comment about 'Fifty shades of gray' is a moot point. And by the way not all women have read that nonsense and not all so called feminists agree with its content soo.....

FirstLadyofGTA

How would men feel if the #1 selling book was all about degrading men?

lol no cares

The sad part are some of these feminists don't realise gta pokes just as much fun at men as it does females. and before anyone mention strippers... ok so we get to see some half nekkid women, but we also get to see a butt nekkid trevor.

Also its sad to see that this halfwit dosn't realise that gta v's social commentary/satire will do more to abolish sexism then her/his and her/his ilk will accomplish in a lifetime.

As for the comments on violence, Everytime I see some american newspaper comment on this I can't help but laugh when they bring up videogames as the big bad wolf, in a country where everyone has the constitutional right to walk around with firearms.

you say feminists as if it were one that wrote the article....just gotta get those jabs in huh? LOL

Well I assumed the author was a woman by their feminist attitude, which is why I made the reference to 50 shades of gray. Wasnt a jab at women at all, but the new breed of feminists that feel the need to wave the mysogony flag every chance they get. HE obviously has some feminist bias that he cant check at the door when playing this game, and Im sure he is much more lenient about these sort of things in film.

tl;dr: The author is a twit

edit: You dont have to be a woman to be a feminist. I wasnt jabbing anyone but the author and their attitude. I agree with everything you said about the social commentary and satire in GTA V that actually holds no group of people sacred, male, female, or otherwise.

Im sorry if my comment came off as a sexist condescending point I was trying to make, but it was just me jabbing at the author who clearly cant write an article without swinging his predispositions and social opinions all over the place.

Insanity and desperation of situation are what causes people to go nuts and kill. People need something to blame when violence happens. It used to be rock n roll music, then it was movies and tv shows, now we have these violent worlds we can inhabit in a game and that makes a perfect scapegoat for peoples fears. To stop violence people should be checked for mental illnesses more often and make sure these sick people don't get access to weapons. I am not saying ban guns either, I am saying that sane people can be trusted to own them. Safely.
