The Infinite 8 mystery

Infinite 8

There's a guy called Merle Abrahams who lived in Sandy Shores. He went a bit doolally and started seeing the number 8 everywhere he went and thought it was a message to sacrifice/murder 8 people, the Infinite 8.

He drew suspicion from his neighbours and was driven out of his home when it was set on fire. The burntout shell of his home remains and there are a few photos below.
0_0.jpg
A neighbour wrote this on Merle's house in an effort to shame him and send him away.

0_0.jpg
There will be 8.

This is evidence of the start of Merle's descent into madness. He states that there will be 8 bodies/deaths to fulfill his ritual. Notice a few other things here? There is a 5-bar gate at the left hand side near the bottom. A common means of counting. Possibly at this point he had only killed 5 of the 8 he needed/wanted.

Above the writing is a drawn image of what looks like Mt Chiliad. It isn't though. It actually points to where the bodies are being laid to rest, the very northern tip of the gamemap.

HTGXuyP.jpg

In the back room of Merle's house is this message. 8 is just infinity stood up. This is the first link between the number 8 and the Ouroboros, the snake that eats itself, the symbol for infinity. What relevance this has is still to be found but it is likely an escalation of the madness of Merle.

After Merle's house was burnt down he fled and lived in the Dignity Village in the northern part of the island. This can be determined by looking in a tent at the camp. On the back of a bin within the tent is a red 8 in the same handwriting as that seen on the writings below.

TRJEmOI.jpg

He continued his killings and eventually reached the total of 8. He bragged about this number by writing on a rock in the desert.

0_0.jpg
One is done
Two was fun
Three tried to run
Four called Mom
Fives not alive
Six is nix
Sevens in Heaven
8 won't wait

This macabre poem describes the deaths of his victims. Note that Merle won't write the word eight, he uses the symbol 8. This symbol obviously has great significance for him.
He also states that 8 won't wait, because of the infinitely looping nature of the character.

After the completion of his ritual he is pursued and eventually caught by the police and sent to prison. Before he is sent he manages to write another piece out in the desert.

0_0.jpg
They want me they can have
But they'll never get my people
Even though I shall leave them sign enough
Where they put me

A chilling message to whoever has followed the clues. Merle knows he is being pursued by the police and will soon be caught. He knows he will go to prison but states he will never give up the location of his victims in a way that can be understood by the police.

Next to this piece of writing is the following addition -

0_0.jpg

8 won't

Well we know from his first poem that 8 won't wait. What does this mean? Has 8 stopped waiting now he has completed his ritual?

Merle is sent to prison, but what about a further confession? On the walls in the recreation yard in the prison near cellblock 9A, the writings below can be seen.

mh6r90.png
Where water meets land and fire once spewed forth
There the Infinite 8 shall stay
Until I return

Accompanying this is a more detailed map showing the northern tip of the game map and the islands to the north of it. It is obvious that Merle hid the bodies at this location and is keeping them here until he is let out, so he can complete his ritual. The surface of the islands have been extensively searched and nothing has been found, no evidence of fire having spewed out from anywhere, no further writings or symbols relating to the number 8.

cSTBtUoh.jpg
Diving under the water around the islands reveals a number of bodies (all 8 are shown below, thanks to Tadden for the picture), bound in wrappings and laid to rest at the bottom of the ocean. The Infinity Killer had reached his sadistic goal.

2quk8yq.jpg

And what became of Merle? Well a newspaper clipping has been found in Sandy Shores that tells us.

VcDd49z.jpg
Just looking at the date on the newspaper (December 2004) and the date of the disappearances we can see that these events occurred quite some years ago, too, late for us to achieve an answer as to why these killings occurred and why the number 8 held so much significance for him.

Where water meets land and fire once spewed forth.

I think it has something to do with Chilliad, which was most likely a volcano in past and formed San Andreas.

I am more confused with the outcome of this mystery.

What exactly this will reward us once solved?

An answer as to what happend to Merle and what the Infinite 8 were/are. This has captivated me a hell of a lot more than the mural on Chiliad. Utter kudos to Rockstar for the LA Noire/Black Dahlia style mystery they created here!

My impression after reading this is that he caught/killed 1-7 but 8 is still alive (being saved).

numbers 1-7 describe a ending in a sense, which 8 does not.

I got that impression too, but what I believe to be his later writings indicate all 8 were left in the area of those islands.

Nowhere ever does it even suggest these are murder victims. Where the 8 rests is where the UFO is in the sea at palletto bay. No proof of any murders or bodies buried there so stop with the misleading

Or the last victim could be in that area alone, in the text he takes care to write 8 before the last victim, as such the infinite eight could very well describe only that person.

Also I don't think Merle Abrahams is the Infinity killer, the words on the wall are written in blood just like the rest, not to mention the 8's, I think its more likely that merle was someone the infinity killer disliked or mabye even his first victim?

Also the image drawn in white on the first picture is not mt chiliad its the same place he later describes in a diffrent poem, notice the islands.

The poem indicates he killed 8 people. It describes (in my opinion) what the victims did and how he felt when he killed them. I'm not misleading anyone about anything. This is my personal interpretation of what I have seen in the game.

Good idea but I get the impression that he means all 8 people as he says "the infinite 8 shall stay" rather than "will stay" which, to me, would indicate a singular. A great idea though and one I hadn't thought of.

Anevilvet, sevens in heaven could mean a UFO in sky or anything. Ur just putting your take on it and saying its confirmed, its not.

It could have any meaning and there's nothing else in the area of palletto bay where all 8 clues lead to, to suggest murders

In a poem where it says one victim called for their mum?

Is there an in-game website relating to this mystery?

No idea, I couldn't find anything for Merle or Abrahams but didn't search for Infinite or 8

What I really want to know is what the starting point of this mystery is for somebody who wants to look into it? Do you hear about it on the radio or something?

This is by far the most interesting mystery in the game to me.

I thought at first "go away merle Abrahams you're a wrong un" was just written there by neighbours and that merle is the killer's name. But then we don't really know that. I tried rearranging the letters to find an anagram, maybe instructions. We didn't get too far.

I thought that maybe you can either save the last victim (if they're alive) or even possibly bring him his last victim (a hitchhiker/prostitute maybe).

I feel there is more to it than just some creepy messages written on walls.

Again more lies, it doesn't say 1 victim called mum it says four called mum, could be a reference to anything undiscovered. Admittedly it does sound as your suggesting but there's no other evidence to support that theory

I reckon Merle had a traumatic expireance with the number 8 causing him to go crackers and start this 'Infinite 8' murder/UFO thing.

That's why it's a mystery. I may be completelywrong and it's a guy who wanted to eat 8 Chicken and Mushroom Pot Noodles in one go. But some of the writing is in the Prison and so seems to be that someone went to prison for something. Victim number 4 called for their mum.

The writing is similar to that inside the house so I'm not sure either.

Great bit of investigation. Wish there were more mysteries like this. Thing is, would solving it actually satisfy you, or is not knowing sometimes better. Would anybody be talking about Jack the Ripper now, if he'd been caught.

He gets in the car with me.

What's this got to do with the infinite 8? Back on topic please.

Honestly? I'd be VERY satisfied.

"There will be 8" suggests there are only 7. Or he could've just wrote this before he killed 8.

"8 is just infinity stood up" could suggest that he won't stop at 8 and will keep going.

Are there any parallels with real life serial murders/killers, which might give you a clue? Would be a bit tasteless of Rockstar, but this is easily their most controversial game so far.

Could the underwater play a part in this?

Quite possibly. The islands indicated at the north are right on the edge of the 'plate', If you scuba dive around the very morthern tip of the northern island, it plummets to quite the depth.

I think you were correct in your first line. On that same wall it appears he's counted to five, so maybe he was only part way through his 'ritual'?

I've looked and been linked to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdalena_Sol%C3%ADs There's a section about the Hernandez Brothers Sect and this whole thing resulted in 8 murders. That's all I could see.

It has a definite Son Of Sam style feel to it though.
