ReadDeadStu
I was reading some GTA related stuff earlier and Dan Houser (Vice President of Rockstar) said that they weren't really interested in pursuing a GTA movie, simply because they wouldn't have the same kind of creative control over it than they would in a game... which is fair enough I guess. But that got me thinking... could it be done? Could there be a way?If it could be done, I reckon the best course of action would not be to base it on any one particular game in the series but do a kind of new story, with a new character... BUT... still set in Liberty City, Los Santos or wherever. This new story would obviously take elements from the games. Basically, like the games, about a guy who arrives in the city, gets mixed up in organised crime, rises to the top. The trick is, have characters from previous games CAMEO in the new story. The film's "hero" could mention "some psycho he's heard of called Trevor". Could mention "some gangbanger called Franklin he's done a job with". Michael DeSanta could show up at some point to give him a mission. Niko Bellic could be on his crew in a heist, Tommy Vercetti could be his uncle... just stuff like that.So rather based on a game, a new story that exists in the same universe as the games kinda thing. Still have the old hallmarks. Lazlow and Fernando Martinez on the radio, the hilarious adverts, a banging soundtrack. And it'd still have to be heavy with satire. I'm not saying I want it to be done... I'd rather Rockstar put the effort into making a new GTA game rather than a film... but still. What do you guys think? GtaIvFanboy
No gta is a game and it should remain a game nothing else but if they did dan houser would have to write it for it to even stand a chance of being a success. there would also be the worry that it might turn out like the max payne movie which was god awful. Oh hell yeah. That goes without saying. No Houser, no movie. I reckon Justin Lin (who did the last three Fast & Furious movies) would be PERFECT to direct it. Or Nicholas Winding Refn (the guy who did Drive, which is a bit like a GTA movie anyway).

GTA 5 story is still ripoff of famous movies, but not too much like previous GTA games. I think this GTA could be easily made as movie.

The Resident Evil movies are really the only succesful video game movies out there. Simply because they don't try and recreate one particular game, they tell a new story set in the same universe with characters from the games cameoing. As sh*t as they may be (they get awful reviews) they are STILL getting made - so I'm wondering if the same approach could work here. If they did a movie based directly on GTA V, why go see it when you can play the game? Nah, audiences will want something new.

I just hope Uwe Boll isnt reading this thread...well Postal was actually fun, but his other movies were garbage.
Pinnkiepie
Well with Ray Liotta as Michael, Ice Cube as Franklin, Mel Gibson or why not even Steven Ogg as Trevor, Christopher Lloyd as Ron, Eminem as Wade, ...it all boils down to the Writers and Directors. I am sure with Michael Mann directing it, it could be a very good movie.

Hungry_Homer111
I think that GTA would work better as a TV series. I think a movie would be a bit too restricted. I am curious to see what direction they would take if they ever did make a movie/TV series though. Would they try to make it a serious narrative, a more fun action/comedy, or a mix of both (which would be my preference).
M'aiq the Liar
Video games make terrible movies. They always bust. Normally movies become games not the other way around.

Would they try to make it a serious narrative, a more fun action/comedy, or a mix of both (which would be my preference). I was just thinking about that. How would they balance this thing? Games and films are of course two completely different mediums and the concept would have to be tweaked to work in a different format. Basically, you'd need a story which has the narrative structure of something like Heat, Goodfellas, Casino, Scarface mixed with the kind of breakneck action of something like a Fast & Furious movie... with a kind of George Carlin like satirical streak which pokes fun at the American culture and American Dream in general, Fight Club being the best example I could think of. To get that tone right in a FILM would take a hell of a lot of doing. Sadly, the only director who I think COULD do is dead and that's Stanley Kubrick. A bold statement? Maybe, but his films were mainly about how experiences can de-humanize people, and he was the only director who could get away with having thoroughly despicable, borderline sociopathic protagonists at the core of his films... which in the face of it is EXACTLY what a movie of this would NEED. LateNightNeons
Rockstar produced the movie "Football Factory" btw which is really good. So they kinda have a little experience I guess. On topic: I don't like movies based on video games and vice versa. Having said that, Rockstar did make a good game based on a movie "The Warriors", can they do the opposite?
