Michael is the best GTA protagonist of all time

Michael carries GTA V for me, really great & human character. Really glad the game focuses on him the most

Realistic character.

Trevor and Franklin were not realistic characters. Trevor feels like a side-character, an imaginary guy you see if you have schizophrenia. His only purpose is to annoy Michael and cause easy plot conflict. Franklin's story moved too fast to make any sense, gang-banger turned millionaire overnight by doing stupid sh*t, CJ's story was more realistic.

So, you call stealing jetpacks and destroying green goo more realistic?

Given how far into the story it happened, yeah.

Not even close. In fact he's in the top 5 worst protagonist. People who try and compare him to Tommy Vercetti should be banned. Tbh all three of V's protags sucked but for different reasons.

The HD era protagonists are much more developed as characters though and they get some points from me for that. Like Tommy is cool and all but we don't really see many sides to his personality or even hear him speak that much. It depends on what you're looking for in a protagonist.

Niko is better than all the GTA 5 protagonists. I don't like Michael because there are hints that he is a snake and his family life was cliche and gimmicky in my opinion.

I agree on all counts but I think the V protagonists still have an edge over the 3D era ones in terms of character depth. Although Michael's family would've been better if they were less cliched the angle of him being a family man still added something. And him being a snake isn't a reason to rate him lower as a character to me. It makes him less likeable as a person but more interesting as a character imo.

I totally get preferring Tommy, he's a real badass and Ray Liotta's voice acting is great. But I get preferring Michael too. They offer different things.

Michael had potential to be far better than Tommy but it seems almost every character puts him down for no good reason and bring the worst out of him as a character.

FIB hates him, Franklin and Trevor both whine about him, Family hates him. His therapist abuses him. Even Madrazo's GF spat on him and we couldn't do anything about it.

Only person who genuinely liked him was Dave and Solomon.

But you can see a few moments of great glory especially when he's helping out Solomon, in those moments, Michael is someone you don't wanna mess with.

Yup, this is why I wanted to see more Solomon missions, on one hand we get to see Michael live his dream more and it was refreshing to see a character the protagonist actually liked working for unlike most cases where they're forced to work for somebody. You can really see Michael have a spring in his step in these missions

Also there are a couple more instances where Michael is treated like a legend of sorts, couple of the heist crew members regard him very highly and Trevor has told stories to Ron potraying him as a bit of a legend iirc. They did make him out to be a bit of a chump sometimes, but overall I felt they did a good job portraying him as a man in charge when he really got going like in the heist missions and with Solomon and I think he's one of the better protagonists in GTA personally.

Algonquin Assassin

As great of a character Michael is I have to admit he's not really the most exciting to free roam. There's only so much tennis, golf, going to movies etc I can take before it gets a little boring. I wish he had some more side missions exclusive to him besides strangers & freaks.

I never understood why he was't an enforcer or something when he started working for Soloman. It would've been fun if he went around to stars' houses who were refusing to work and we beat the sh*t out of them to "convince" to come back. It's also disappointing that R* didn't capitalise on his high shooting skill. His own set of assassinations like Franklin gets would've been awesome. Norton or Haines could've given him those.

That part could've been more interesting had it been tied with more crime organizations. Probably a crime family and the Madrazo cartel.

But then again, the traditional criminal organizations didn't live up to their potential as much as they did in the predecessors' stories.

Ahhhh in that sense, same can be said for all protags of GTA games so I wasn't referring in that sense.

Tommy had the support of Ken, Cortez and Avery. (So I assume you didn't mean all of the people literally)

Even Tommy's enemies like Ricardo, Lance and Sonny knew what he was capable and showed him respect. Anyone who picked a fight with Tommy regretted it.
Previous GTA games have always given player the power fantasy of teaching hostile people a lesson. Tommy was particularly respected and feared by both friends and foe. He was awesome.

GTA V unfortunately presents Michael in a pathetic light tho, as I pointed out earlier, even when characters admits that he is a talented criminal, they still take their turns disrespecting him and making him feel small especially as I pointed out about Madrazo's bitch spitting on him and we couldn't do anything (heck his own son drugs/robs him and gets away with it). In contrast, Tommy would have cut her tongue off and seized Madrazo's land in response.

100 percent agreed. I don't mind Michael, kinda liked his character, but all that Hollywood family life was too gimmicky and corny for me, I just could not take it seriously in a GTA game. Niko is definitely the best HD protagonist in my view.

Definitely the most "grounded" of the main characters in the series, but somehow keeps getting dragged into all the craziness that's V.

There is no worst or best here, they all are equally bad. Michaels dialogues with Solomon are a cringe seekers wet dream and really nothing to laugh about, unqualified workforce is a serious and real problem lol

5. Johnny Klebitz

6. Toni Capriani

7. Carl Johnson

8. Franklin Clinton

9. Luis Fernando

1. Niko Bellic — amazing story of revenge, he then realizes that it is not worth it.

2. Vic Vance — has family values and fights for his kin.

3. Johnny Klebitz — dark-toned but rather sensitive character, amazing story as well. I didn't recognize him in V, never thought he would use drugs and become weak.

4. Carl Johnson "CJ" — iconic though naive due to his age (he is the youngest protagonist): begins as a hustler in L.C., a gang banger in L.S., and a chasing-money player afterwards. Eventually realizes that you mustn't forget where you come from.

5. Tommy Vercetti — rough, cold blooded, fearless, straightforward.

6. Luis Fernando — takes care of his mom, good story.

7. Claude — doesn't care at all what you say, he always gets the job done.

8. Michael DeSanta — a liar, fake, living-in-the-past character who can't raise his children properly. At least he is getting better at the end of the game.

9. Trevor — sometimes funny, most of time speaks for nothing else but being stupid. It felt like R* tried too hard with this one; they could do a lot better.

10. Franklin — it started really good and I got nostalgic of GTA SA but then, he became a useless, whining character whose goal is only making money. He even leaves his girlfriend, aunt, and friends away.

11. Toni Cipriani — only played throughout LCS' story once but he didn't really leave his mark on me.

Couldn't have described em better myself. Very good analysis.

I would further add that if anyone wants to play as a GTA character that is living a fun luxurious life, I would suggest go for TBOGT because Luis was closer to what Michael should have been, you know, living the dream and all. I just wanted Michael to be the head of a crime family of his own, that's usually the mark of success in GTA universe.

It would have been better for both R* and Michael if they kept him as a single character. They could have made him lose most of his money over the Madrazo misunderstanding and then build up the missions from that point, him trying to get money back and gather his old crew. Surely, we approximately got that but his story itself was too meager to be considered good.

Dark Rosewood Varnish

Lol at the thread title. This topic was started on September 23rd 2017, literally a reactionary thread. Michaels character has you intrigued at first, but after a few days of playing you begin to realise just how boring and uninteresting he actually is.

People here are mostly arguing about whether an over-the-top protag is better than a down-to-earth realist type of protag.

He's definitely one of the better-written protagonists in the series imo. The whole game should have just centered around him.
