A little help understanding...

I'm needing some help comprehending some of the characters and plot lines but as that you PLEASE do not use any spoilers. With that in mind, if you have not played the mission where

Trevor tortures some one (forgot his name)

please don't worry about reading any further.

 

If you have, I need some help.

 

First of all, can someone explain (again without completely spoiling anything) what Dave's deal is? I know he's FIB but is he just kind of a shaddy character that's done some bad deals? And who are the new guys (Steve and whoever the other guy is). Why are they kidnapping this person and torturing him (I don't remember his name either).

 

I absolutely hate when I don't understand plot lines or characters motives on games like this and want to get it straight in my head before going any further. If someone can explain the basics to me I'd appreciate it but once again let me reiterate, please NO SPOILERS past the mission I'm on (the torture scene).
