Switching characters

Sorry to post such a monumentally stupid question, but can you only switch chartacters during missions? I thought it was something you could do as and when you pleased, but no matter what buttons I press I can't switch from Michael to the black dude.

When in Free-Roam, hold down the "down" key on the D-pad and choose the character you want. Does not work while wanted by the cops.

Thanks, ryan, but I pressed every button there is. I actually went through them methodically in case I was missing it, but no matter what I pressed I couldn't bring the wheel up. I was on the forecourt of Michael's house and was trying to change to the black guy, but just couldn't. I wasn't on a mission and there were no cops after me.

hate how u lose your outfit each time. or if u change for like even 5 seconds then chane back the character has travelled all the way across the map. damn they run fast

agreed... the most dumbest thing. trevor however always seems to have the same outfit thankfully

What Ryan said... down on the d-pad, then use the right stick to select the character. There are times when you can't switch - if wanted by the cops, or if you're on a mission that's for your character only, or

after the jewelry store heist when Michael and Franklin are lying low,

 

for example.
